Downtown Passenger Train History
Did you know that downtown Atlanta once had four passenger train terminals? Unfortunately none remain today, but we’ll visit the sites, look at photos and get a birds-eye view of the remaining tracks. This one-hour tour includes a history crash course in Atlanta rail, including the construction of MARTA, with stops at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot, Atlanta’s zero mile marker and the potential site of Amazon’s new headquarters.
Nine Mile Circle Revival
Atlanta’s second electric streetcar line was the Nine Mile Trolley that circled the Virginia Highland neighborhood starting in 1889. We’ll retrace the “delightfully cool” loop portion of the old route via urban hike from Ponce City Market. Highlights of the tour include streetcar relics still visible today, historic information about the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917 and the Virginia Highlands neighborhood, plus a pit stop for frozen treats. Total walking time is one hour, and tour length approximately 1.5 hours.
Candler Park Neighborhood Exploration
Candler Park is a charming and historic neighborhood full of amenities, whether you need to run errands after work while commuting on MARTA or are looking for a new brunch spot. This tour will highlight some of the great local businesses, restaurants and recreational opportunities in the area. Walking time is approximately 45 minutes with a tour length of about 1 hour, which includes a stop at the neighborhood market for refreshments, snacks or King of Pops!
