Looking for a place to cool off? Atlanta’s public swimming pools are a great way to beat the heat, several of which are near a train station. Here are six you can easily get to on MARTA for inexpensive summer fun.
Piedmont Park Pool
Recently renovated, the Piedmont Park pool (pictured above) has free swim hours, paid public hours and hours for pool pass holders only. Features include lap lanes, mini lazy river and a children’s area.
For easiest access to the pool, use the 14th Street park entrance closest to the Arts Center MARTA station or take bus 27, 36, 99 from the Midtown Station to shorten the walk.
Ebster Park Pool and Glenlake Pool
For twice the pool fun on the blue line, head to the Decatur station for the Ebster Park and Glenlake pool. Although smaller than the Piedmont Park pool, Ebster Park provides the perk of being closer to MARTA and is near restaurants, ice cream and frozen yogurt shops. The larger Glenlake pool is larger, but a further walk down the street.
For the Ebster Park pool, take the Swanton Way exit out of the Decatur MARTA station and walk a block to Commerce Drive and turn left. At the next intersection, turn right on Trinity Avenue and walk another two blocks. Take the Church Street exit out of the station and turn left on Church to reach Glenlake.
Candler Park Pool
Also off the blue line is the pool at Candler Park. Enjoy free swim hours throughout the week and other activities. Walking time is just under 15 minutes from the Candler Park MARTA station. After your swim, stop by the Candler Park village on McClendon Avenue for pizza at Fellinis or tacos at La Fonda. There’s also a small grocery store if you need other supplies.
Grant Park Pool
Located near Zoo Atlanta in historic Grant Park, the Grant Park pool offers long lanes for laps and options for activities before or after your swim including sports, playgrounds and picnics in the park. Walking time to the pool is about 25 minutes from the King Memorial MARTA station, or bike for a shorter commute. The other option is to catch the neighborhood bus at the Five Points station (32). Free swim is before 4 p.m. on weekdays.
Doraville Municipal Pool
Many people don’t know that there’s a swimming pool surprisingly close to the Doraville MARTA Station at the end of the gold line. The pool is closed on Mondays, and can be rented throughout week for private events and parties. Cross the street in front of the station and turn right on New Peachtree Road to reach Flowers Park. There’s a pool sign marking a small driveway that leads back to the pool (look for the small brick building).
Washington Park Natatorium
For a swimming experience all year long, check out the indoor pool at Washington Park natatorium. Take a blue or green line train to the Ashby MARTA station and turn right at street level. At the corner, make a quick left on Lena Street to reach the park. The pool is also near the BeltLine Westside Trail, Lionel Hampton trail and park amenities.
