Georgia Transportation Options

Although Georgia currently does not have commuter trains, you can still get across the state without a car using Amtrak or one of several bus services. Explore options below.

Amtrak

In Georgia, Amtrak trains stop in:

  • Atlanta (Crescent)
  • Gainesville (Crescent)
  • Toccoa (Crescent)
  • Jessup (Silver Service/Palmetto)
  • Savannah (Silver Service/Palmetto)

Travel time between Atlanta and Gainesville is 55 minutes on the train and about 1 hour and 36 minutes to Toccoa (one train per day).

There is no direct rail service from Atlanta to Savannah, but the Atlanta Crescent route does travel to cities including New Orleans, Charlotte, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City.

Greyhound

Georgia Greyhound stations are in Albany, Athens, Atlanta, Augusta, Brunswick, Columbus, Conyers, Dalton, Ft. Gordon, Gainesville, Greensboro, Hinesville Fleming, La Grange, Macon, Madison, Marietta, Monroe, Norcoss, Savannah, Thomasville, Thomson, Tifton, Trenton, Unadilla, Valdosta and Washington.

Megabus

The Megabus stops in Atlanta and Athens. If you are traveling between the two cities, commute time is 1 hour and 45 minutes. See Atlanta Megabus FAQ for more information.

Southeastern Stages

Another bus commute option, Southeastern Stages is bus service that stops in Athens, Atlanta, Augusta, Conyers, Fort Gordon, Greensboro, Madison, Monroe, Norcross, Savannah, Thomson and Washington, Georgia, as well as cities in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Atlanta Regional Buses

MARTA only operates in the Atlanta area and does not travel to the suburbs. See below for alternate travel options and contact information for questions on travel to Cobb, Gwinnett and other area counties.

Most routes are not very frequent and some do not operate on the weekend. Your best bet is to use MARTA with a taxi or Uber. New Uber riders can sign up with promo code MARTAGuide to get $20 off your first ride.

Cobb County

MARTA bus 12 from the Midtown MARTA station is the only MARTA route to Cobb, terminating at the Cumberland Transfer Center behind Cumberland Mall. The Sandy Springs station is closest to East Cobb (you will need to use a taxi or Uber from the station). The H.E. Holmes station is closest to Austell. For the Cumberland and Vinings area, take Uber from the Midtown or Medical Center stations.

Gwinnett County

The Doraville MARTA station is closest to Norcross, Duluth, Lilburn and Lawrenceville. Use the Indian Creek MARTA station for Snellville. You will need to use a taxi or Uber or arrange for another ride.

GRTA Xpress

For information on travel using GRTA Xpress, call 404-463-4782. They offer additional routes that travel to cities all around the metro area, including to Newnan, Conyers, McDonough and Woodstock.
