Holy MARTA bus, Batman! Atlanta is exploding with new and altered bus routes in August. Here are the biggest changes taking place on Saturday, August 18, and be sure to view the full list of service adjustments online.

Full Monroe Drive Service (with Sweetwater Brewery stop)

Monroe Drive, a key corridor next to Piedmont Park, is finally getting complete bus service. The new 809 route is pretty awesome — basically a straight shot up Boulevard from the King Memorial MARTA station to the end of of Monroe Drive with a termination at Lindbergh Center. As a bonus, on some trips the bus will stop at Sweetwater Brewery. Win. Note that this route is replacing bus 99.

New Old Fourth Ward Bus

Replacing bus 109, bus 899 is a needed Old Fourth Ward route that will travel on North Avenue, Glen Iris, Parkway and Jackson Street with stops at the North Avenue, King Memorial and Georgia State stations. Major attractions and landmarks along the route include Central Park, Ponce City Market, Old Fourth Ward Park, Jackson Street Bridge, Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site, Sweet Auburn Curb Market and Grady Hospital.

Additional Emory Service

Bus 16 will be renamed 816, with the same service in downtown Atlanta and on Ralph McGill and N. Highland Avenue, but with a new turn around point at Emory University. From Johnson Road, the bus will head north on Briarcliff then turn right on Clifton Road. Emory Point, CDC and Emory University Hospital are some of the major new stops. This is a great bus option for Emory students, faculty and staff (or CDC employees) who live in Morningside, Virginia Highland, Poncey Highland or Inman Park near Freedom Parkway.

Grant Park Bus Upgrades

Grant Park is getting new bus service this month, including the new 832 Grant Park neighborhood bus. (Bus 32, which has served the neighborhood for years, is migrating over to the Inman Park MARTA station and will travel to East Atlanta going forward.) The new bus stops at the West End MARTA station and the Moreland Kroger shopping center at the other end of the route, which we think is great for residents who need to get groceries or reach a rail line. The bus will also travel through Summerhill with a stop near the Georgia State Stadium. Major streets of service are Ralph David Abernathy Blvd., Georgia Avenue, Cherokee Avenue, Atlanta Avenue, Confederate Avenue and Moreland Avenue.

Additionally, be sure to check out the altered bus 9 route, which will depart from the King Memorial MARTA station every 30 minutes, then hop on I-20 with an exit at Boulevard. The bus will travel south on Boulevard along Grant Park to Custer Avenue. This provides a relatively short bus commute to Zoo Atlanta, about 10 minutes.

Intown Bus Shuffles

Buses 32 and 74 will call Reynoldstown/Inman Park station home starting Aug. 18. Meanwhile 107 is moving from Inman Park to the Georgia State MARTA station (but will continue service to/from Glenwood Park) and bus 21 will depart from Five Points instead of King Memorial, so it will span more of Memorial Drive.

Improved Brookhaven Service

Bus 110, which travels on Peachtree Road, will travel between the Brookhaven MARTA station and the Arts Center MARTA station starting August 18. It provides an additional commute option for neighborhood residents who work along Peachtree Road in the Buckhead, Brookwood Hills and Midtown neighborhoods. Additionally, if you get stuck on the gold line with a delay, now you can hop off at Brookhaven and continue south to the Arts Center MARTA station via this bus.
