With jazz all month long and festivals of all kinds, Atlanta in May is one long celebration before the summer heat arrives. If you’re looking for things to do, see below for some of the top events near MARTA for car-free fun. On Memorial Day, MARTA will be on a Sunday schedule, which means train frequency from Saturday through Monday will be every 20 minutes. Use the MARTA on the Go app for real-time arrivals to plan your commute and avoid long waits on train platforms.
Note that ticket links are through a guaranteed ticket resale site (which may provide ticket options you might not find elsewhere) and support transit. Have a great month!
1. Taste of East Point
On Saturday May 7, visit Atlanta’s southern neighbor for a community food festival next to the East Point MARTA station on the red/gold line. The Taste of East Point features a variety of food, live music and an artist market. Tasting tickets are $1 and available on site.
2. Shaky Knees/Shaky Beats Festivals
It’s twice the EDM and hip-hop fun with two weekends of music festivals in Centennial Olympic Park this May: Shaky Knees (May 13-15) and Shaky Beats (May 20-22). All trains will put you in walking distance to entrance gates near the Dome and Peachtree Center MARTA stations. Tip: If you need a backup plan for basic necessities, the CNN Center and Mall at Peachtree Center have public bathrooms and ATMs.
The big concert this month is Rhianna on May 18 at Philips Arena. The Wednesday night show also includes Travis Scott. For a fun place to go before or after the show, check out SkyLounge above the Glenn Hotel or get food/drinks at Dantanna’s or McCormick and Schmick’s in the CNN Center.
Games, cosplay and more games take over the Georgia World Congress Center May 26-29 at MomCon. The weekend lineup includes special guests, panels, night at the Georgia Aquarium and lots of opportunities to play video games, board games and card games. Check out hotels near MARTA if you’re visiting the city and looking for an easy way to get to and from the event.
5. Mexico vs Paraguay
You can literally kick off Memorial Day weekend with soccer in the Georgia Dome. The May 28 match in Atlanta is part of the Mexican National Team U.S. Tour and there are plenty of tickets under $50. Be sure to use the very convenient Georgia Dome exit at the Dome/Philips Arena station for direct access to the venue without going above ground.
6. Decatur Arts Festival
If soccer isn’t your thing, embrace all things artistic and creative at the Decatur Arts Festival May 28-29. Directly above the Decatur MARTA station on the blue line, the festival has something for everyone, including an artist market, author readings, kid festival, dance and comedy. Bring a blanket to relax in the small-town square and don’t forget to try one of the many great restaurants in walking distance.
7. Atlanta Jazz Festival
Last but not least, the Atlanta Jazz Festival is another festival option over Memorial Day weekend. In Piedmont Park Friday-Sunday, the event has limited parking available (and street parking is for residents only), making MARTA a smart way to travel. Use either the Midtown or Arts Center station or ride your bike and use the bike valet near Park Tavern.
Although the walking time is a bit longer,
