MARTA to Morningside

Morningside is a residential Atlanta neighborhood just north of Virginia Highland.  It contains a small commercial area on N. Highland Avenue with restaurants and businesses, and on Saturday mornings a farmer’s market.  Highlights include Rosebud, Family Dog, Alon’s Bakery and Natural Body Day Spa.  The neighborhood isn’t a near a MARTA rail station, but bus 16 and bus 36 go to the neighborhood.  You can board bus 36 at the Midtown or Avondale Stations or bus 16 at Five Points.

Helpful Tips

  • Bus 36 doesn’t run very late in the evening, so plan your trip accordingly.
  • Family Dog has live music on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
  • More restaurants and shops are located south on N. Highland Avenue in the Virginia Highland neighborhood.

MARTA to the Dekalb Farmer’s Market

Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market is one of the biggest indoor markets in the city, located at 3000 E. Ponce De Leon Avenue in Decatur.  It is located closest to the Avondale MARTA station, but a long walk.  It is best to take bus 36 from the Avondale station, or connect with the bus at the Midtown station, in Virginia Highland on N. Highland Avenue between Virginia Avenue and East Rock Springs or next to Emory on N. Decatur Road.

MARTA to Grant Park

Grant Park sits in a historic district of turn-of-the-century homes and contains a large public pool, wooded paths, playgrounds, tennis courts, Zoo Atlanta and more.  The park is also home to the Summer Shade Festival that takes place every August.

The closest station to Grant Park is King Memorial on the blue/green rail line.  Plan for a 15 minute walk to the edge of the park  and another 20 to walk the length of the park itself (see walking directions and map).  Otherwise, you can take bus 32 from the Five Points or Civic Center station.  This route also connects to the Georgia Aquarium if you want to combine attractions.

  • If you decide to walk from the King Memorial Station, there are several restaurants on the way including Augustine’s, Tin Lizzy’s, Ria’s Bluebird and The Republic if you want to break up the walk with breakfast, lunch or dinner.
  • Use extra caution if walking after dark, and bus is preferable then.
  • Look up bus schedules ahead of time to plan your trip.  Printed bus schedules are available at the Five Points Station or download the MARTA app to have all schedules with you on the go.

Peachtree Center MARTA Station

The Peachtree Center MARTA Station is located in downtown Atlanta at 216 Peachtree Street NE.   The station is famous for having some of the longest escalators in the Southeast, and is the furthest underground out of all the other rail stations.

What’s Nearby
As one of the most walkable MARTA stations, you can walk to attractions like the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coke and Centennial Olympic Park in addition to many restaurants, nightlife venuesAmericasMart and Georgia State University.  There are also many hotels within a 15-minute walk of the station in a variety of price ranges and several rental car companies.

Directions
All trains departing from the airport and all trains going southbound go to the Peachtree Center Station.  If you are coming from the east/west rail line, then you must exit at the Five Points Station and transfer to a northbound train.

Buses/Parking
Because the station sits right along busy Peachtree Street, there are no MARTA bus routes that connect to this station.  However, GCT 101 to/from Buford has a stop outside the station at Baker and Peachtree Street.  Other regional buses have stops on Peachtree Center Avenue, one block over from the station. There is  no parking.

Commute Time
It takes 17 minutes to get to/from the airport and only 1 minute to the Five Points Station.

MARTA to Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park is one of Atlanta’s largest and nicest public parks and regularly hosts the Dogwood Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Piedmont Park Arts Festival, Pride Festival, Atlanta Ice Cream Festival and Green Concert in addition to Unplugged in the Park (live music at the Park Tavern).   The park also features playgrounds, dog park, a public swimming pool, athletic fields, running track and tennis courts (see area map).

If you are gearing up to take the train, the closest MARTA station to Piedmont Park is the Midtown Station, closely followed by the Arts Center Station.

The Arts Center Station gets you closer to the sports fields, running track, pavilions and slightly closer to the lake, pool and Saturday morning Green Market.  Walking time is about 15 minutes from this station. Take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station and turn left onto West Peachtree Street.  Walk one block and turn left onto 14th Street and take that all the way to the park, about three blocks.

Or, you can exit at the Midtown Station and take 10th Street down to the park.  This route will put you closer to meadow and  Park Tavern.   It is approximately a 10 minute walk to the edge of the park. Exit the Midtown station onto 10th Street and turn right (if you come up from the Federal Reserve station exit, turn left).

Three buses will also put you next to the park if you don’t want to walk the 10-15 minute distance from or to the train. All buses depart from the Midtown station:

  • Bus 36 goes down 10th Street and on to the Virginia Highland, Emory and the Avondale Station
  • Bus 99 also goes down 10th Street and then south on Monroe Drive to the Georgia State Station
  • Bus 27 has a stop just outside the 14th Street park entrance and then travels on to the Botanical Garden and Lindbergh Center

Helpful Tips

  • It is nearly a 15 minute walk from either station to the edge of the park, so be prepared to walk and have strollers for kids.
  • An ATM and a small market is on 10th Street near the park if you need cash or water/provisions for the park.
  • The closest MARTA station for parking is the Lindbergh Center station.
  • If you exit at the Midtown station, peer into the bus bay to see if any of the buses are there.  If so, hop on the bus unless you want the walking exercise.  It is free to transfer to the bus from the train, just tap your Breeze card when exiting the station and again on the bus.
