Peachtree Road Race

June 28, 2009 · 1 Comment

The Peachtree Road Race is back again for Fourth of July weekend, taking place on Saturday, July 4th.  With MARTA funding in dire straits, I’m not really expecting there to be bus shuttles this year, but this event is easily accessible by MARTA trains.

The start of the race takes place just outside Phipps Plaza.  You can get to Phipps by either the Buckhead or Lenox train stations:

  1. From Lenox, walk straight out of the station and go up Lenox Road, then turn right on Peachtree.
  2. From Buckhead, take the first set of stairs out of the station and turn left onto Peachtree Street and walk for few blocks…making sure you cross over GA 400 and go by Lenox Square Mall.  If you don’t, then you are walking the wrong way.

The end of the race is at Piedmont Park at 10th and Charles Allen, so whether you’re wanting to watch the runners finish, or are a runner needing to get back to your car or other destination, the closest train station is  Midtown on 10th Street.

If you time it right, and are tired at the end of the race and don’t want to walk 20 minutes to the Midtown station, the finish line is very close to Monroe Drive.  There you can hop on bus 27, which will take you southbound to the North Avenue station or northbound to Lindbergh.  Both buses and trains should be running on the normal Saturday schedule.

Oops – on the wrong train

June 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I’m a seasoned MARTA rider and sometimes I still accidentally get on the wrong northbound train.  MARTA has two north lines – to North Springs and to Doraville.  You have to be careful as sometimes the trains are announced or labeled incorrectly, or on rare occasion, two Doraville or two North Springs trains will come in a row – so don’t assume that if the first train that comes by is a North Springs train, that the next will be a Doraville.

If you need to switch trains, the point of no return is at the Lindbergh station.  You are in luck though if you happen to be going to the Buckhead or Lenox stations.  Of course you can wait for a train to take you back to Lindbergh to transfer to the right train, or you can actually just walk as these stations are less than 20 minutes apart on foot.    Especially if you are  going to Lenox Square Mall or Phipp’s Plaza, both stations are equally convenient to the malls, so it doesn’t really matter if you get on the wrong train.  Bus 23 and 110 also connect the two stations if you’d rather ride.
