MARTA to the Tabernacle

January 7, 2010 · Leave a Comment

One of Atlanta’s music venues, the Tabernacle is located downtown near the Peachtree Center Station (see area map).  When exiting the station, be sure to take the center set of stairs/escalators that point to Harris Street.   After going through the fare gate, follow the signs to Peachtree Street West.

At street level keep to the right along Peachtree Road before turning right onto Andrew Young International (Hard Rock Cafe will be diagonally across the street).

At Spring Street turn left, then turn right onto Luckie Street just after you walk by Ted’s Montana Grill.  The Tabernacle is less than a block down on the left.

You can also exit at the W1 Station, following Centennial Park Drive north along the park before turning right onto Luckie.    The walk takes about 11 minutes.

MARTA to the Georgia Dome

September 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

To get to the Georgia Dome, you’ll want to exit at the W1 Dome/GWCC/Phillips Arena stop OR the W2 Vine City. The Vine City stop will have less traffic and put you more easily on street level without all the underground climbing at the W1 stop.

If you are coming from the north or south lines, you will have to transfer at Five Points.  This is where it can get tricky.  Make sure you follow signs to the WESTBOUND platform.  Many times I have seen people go up a stairway or escalator that is to the eastbound platform, and there is no way to get to the train you need that way.  Generally, it is usually better to exit to the outside (not center) platform.  When in doubt, just follow the signs as there are plenty that can direct you to the westbound train.

Once you get to W1, merely follow the signs pointing to the Georgia Dome (which has its own exit separate from Philips Arena).  Or if you get off at W2, Vine City, merely walk down Rhodes Street when you exit the station (see map).  You can’t miss seeing the Dome.

MARTA to Philips Arena

July 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Philips Arena is one of the easiest destinations to get to on MARTA.  It essentially has its own train station, the W1 Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena stop.  If you are coming from the north or south lines, you will have to transfer at Five Points.    This is where it can get tricky.  Make sure you follow signs to the WESTBOUND platform.  It is usually better to exit to the outside (not center) platform.  When in doubt, just follow the signs as there are plenty that can direct you to the westbound train.

Once you get to W1, merely follow the signs again to Philips Arena.  Plan for a good number of stairs, but at the top is an entrance to the venue.  Stay to the right at the top of the escalators or if you need a ramp, go to the left to get up to street level.  Is is about a two minute walk to Philips Arena once you exit the fare gate.

MARTA to the Georgia Aquarium

June 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The Georgia Aquarium continues to be one of most popular tourist attractions in the city, and now the Aquarium is offering Friday Jazz Journeys concerts for an added perk to the exhibits.

There are several options for getting to the aquarium:

  1. Take the train to Peachtree Center and take the Harris Street exit out of the station.  Walk north a block to Baker Street then turn left (west) on Baker.  The aquarium is about 4 blocks down.
  2. Take the train to W1/Dome/GWCC stop.  Take the Philip’s Arena exit out of the station and more or less walk straight ahead and through the park.
  3. Catch bus 97 from the Civic Center Station.   This a great route because it will also take you to the Atlanta zoo, so you can hit both attractions on the same bus line.
  4. Catch bus 113 from Arts Center or Five Points.  This bus will get you about a block away from the Aquarium.  Route 97, though, will get you closer and probably a little easier to ride.

Screen on the Green

June 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Screen on the Green is up and running again tonight as long as it doesn’t rain.  The movies are playing in Centennial Park, and not Piedmont Park, so take MARTA to the Peachtree Center MARTA station and walk due west for about 3 blocks or exit at the Dome/GWCC stop on the West line (take the Philip’s Arena exit) and keeping walking straight past Philip’s Arena and CNN to get to the park.  There are only three more movies left, tonight Field of Dreams, Home Alone on June 18 and Ghostbusters on June 25.

Two Ways to Get to Centennial Park

June 4, 2009 · 1 Comment

Most people tend to get to Centennial Olympic Park via the W1/Georgia Dome/GWCC stop on the west line.  However, now that summer events like Screen on the Green, Wednesday Wind Downs and July 4th are in full swing or approaching, it is good to know some alternate routes.

It is just as easy to exit at the Peachtree Center Station at any of the exits EXCEPT the exit for the public library.  Take one of the Peachtree Street/Peachtree Center exits and at street level you can walk west down Andrew Young International Blvd., Harris Street or Baker Street and end up in the park.    These streets will also put you closer to the stage/ice rink as well as the Children’s Museum, World of Coke and the Georgia Aquarium.
