MARTA to the W Hotel

There are four W Hotels in close proximity to MARTA:

  1. W Hotel Downtown
Exit at the Civic Center Station on the red/gold rail line and head south (toward the skyscrapers) on West Peachtree Street.  Turn right at the first stoplight, Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd., and the hotel will be about a block down on the right.
  2. W Hotel Midtown
Exit at the Arts Center Station on the red/gold rail line and take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station.  Turn left to walk alongside West Peachtree Street and turn left again onto 14th Street.  Walk about 3.5 blocks to reach the hotel at 188 14th Street.  You can also get on bus 27 at the Midtown station, which has a stop across from the hotel.
  3. W Hotel Buckhead
Take a red line/North Springs train to the Buckhead Station.  After exiting the fare gates, keep walking straight ahead until the corridor dead ends at a elevator/stairway (bypass the first set of stairs).  Go up to street level and turn right.  The W Hotel is about a block down on the right and also features a swanky rooftop bar called Whiskey Blue.
  4. W Hotel Perimeter
It is a little harder to walk to this hotel due to lack of sidewalks, and if you have luggage, getting a taxi from the Dunwoody Station is advised.  Otherwise, take a North Springs/red line train to the Dunwoody station and after exiting the fare gates, turn right to walk along a corridor that eventually goes down to street level.  Turn right at the bottom of the stairs then a quick left at the first street to walk around Perimeter Mall.  The hotel is at the northern side of the mall campus (see area map).

MARTA to the Apple Store

If you’re a little iPhone crazy or need a new Apple gadget, there are two Apple Stores right off the MARTA rail line.

The first Apple Store location is in Lenox Mall.  You can take a northbound Doraville or North Springs train from the airport/downtown and exit at either the NE7 Lenox station or the N7 Buckhead station.  The store is about half-way between the two stations inside Lenox Square.  For more specific walking directions, see MARTA to Lenox Mall.

There is also an Apple Store at Perimeter Mall, which is right next to the N9 Dunwoody station.

For more information, see the 10 easiest destinations to get to on MARTA and other shopping destinations near transit.

MARTA to the Atlanta Financial Center

The Atlanta Financial Center is located next to the N7 Buckhead MARTA station.  If coming from the airport or from downtown, you must be on a train labeled “North Springs” to get to the Buckhead station, which is on the north/south red line.

Once exiting the fare gates at the station, keep walking straight ahead and take the pedestrian tunnel underneath Peachtree Road, bypassing the first set of stairs to street level.  At the end of the tunnel go up the stairway and turn right to walk alongside Peachtree Street.  The first driveway on the right will be for the Financial Center.  Walking time is less than 5 minutes.

For more information, see how to use Google Maps for MARTA directions and the 5 most walkable MARTA stations.

MARTA to Piedmont Hospital

Piedmont Hospital is located on Peachtree Street in between Midtown and Buckhead (see map).  It is not in walking distance from a MARTA rail station, but you can take bus 110 from either the N7 Buckhead, NE7 Lenox or N5 Arts Center stations to get there.

The most direct route is to catch the northbound 110 bus at the Arts Center.  The bus travels up and down Peachtree Street and has a stop at the hospital and the neighboring Shepherd Center.

If you get on bus 110 at the Buckhead station, make sure it is a southbound bus (take the first set of stairs out of the station to street level).  Be advised that both the Arts Center and Buckhead stations have the 110 bus going both north and southbound.  If you aren’t sure if you are on the right bus, just ask the driver.

For more information, see how to use Google maps for MARTA directions.

Buckhead MARTA Station

The  Buckhead MARTA Station is located on on the red rail line at 3360 Peachtree Road, next to GA 400 and across from the Atlanta Financial Center (see area map).  With easy access to Lenox Mall, Phipps Plaza and several hotels and nice restaurants, staying around the Buckhead Station is a good option for direct access to shopping/dining and still have a 15-minute or less train ride to attractions in Midtown and downtown.

Directions
The closest highway exit is Lenox Road off of GA 400.  Or if traveling by MARTA, you must be on a red line train (labeled “North Springs” if coming from the south) to reach the Buckhead station.  If coming from the east or west lines, exit at Five Points and follow the signs to the Northbound platform to get to a “North Springs” train.

Be advised that after 7 pm, you can only get to a “North Springs” train at the Lindbergh station.  So if you are coming from the airport, downtown or midtown, merely get on the first northbound train that arrives and exit at Lindbergh and wait for the “North Springs” train.

Parking
There is no parking at this station, but there is a drop off/pick area  for passengers, though traffic can be heavy in the area, especially at rush hour..

Buses
There is only one bus route that connects with this station, bus 110 “The Peach”, which travels all the way up and down Peachtree Street from Five Points to Lenox Mall.  The free Buc Shuttle also has a stop at the station.

Commute Time
It takes 16 minutes to get from Buckhead to Five Points/downtown and 32 minutes to the airport.

An alternate walking route is take the non-mall exit off the train platform and walk up Oak Valley Road (see walking map).  This route is a little more direct and has less car traffic.

You can also exit at the Buckhead Station.  After exiting the fare gate, take the first set of stairs up to street level and turn left.  Walk along Peachtree Street for about three blocks and Phipps will be on the left at the fourth stoplight.  A new Buckhead station bridge over GA 400 will be completed in 2013 that will provide a more direct walking route to the mall once completed.

MARTA to Amtrak

Atlanta’s Amtrak station is in Midtown Atlanta at 1688 Peachtree Street.  To get there on MARTA, take a red or gold line train to the Arts Center Station and follow the signs to the buses.  Be sure to tap your Breeze ticket or card when exiting the fare gate to get a free transfer to th

Board bus 110 that is labeled “Buckhead Station” or “Lenox Station” (be advised there is also a southbound bus, so be sure to board the one heading north). You can tell the driver you’d like to exit at the Amtrak station if you aren’t sure of the stop.  You’ll want to indicate the bus to stop as you pass over the interstate if you are coming from the Arts Center.  If coming from Buckhead, indicate a stop just after crossing the stoplight at Deering Road (see area map).

If you are arriving at the Amtrak station, Peachtree Street runs right next to the station.  Stand at the closest bus stop along the same side of the street as the station to board bus 110 to the Arts Center station.  Or if you cross Peachtree Street, you’ll travel northbound to Buckhead and Lenox Mall, stopping at both the Buckhead and Lenox MARTA stations.  You can pay cash to ride the bus.  A one-way fare is $2.50, but does not include a transfer to the train.  You can purchase a Breeze Card online in advance to save money and receive a free rail transfer.

MARTA to Lenox Mall

Lenox Square Mall is located at 3393 Peachtree Road, just across the street from the  Lenox MARTA Station, making it one of the easiest destinations to get to on MARTA.  You’ll need to be on a gold line train to get to the station.  If coming from the airport, downtown or midtown, look for a train labelled “Doraville”.  After getting off the train at Lenox, follow the signs pointing toward Lenox Mall to exit the station. After exiting the fare gates, walk straight ahead alongside Lenox Road and turn left at the sidewalk entrance to the J.W. Marriott Hotel where there is a large fountain out front.  The entrance is actually one to the mall as well.

The other department stores anchoring the mall are Macy’s and Neiman Marcus.  Macy’s features the classic Pink Pig ride and the Great Tree during the holiday season, and one of the largest fireworks shows in the southeast are located at the mall on July 4.

You can also exit at the Buckhead Station.  After exiting the fare gates, take the tunnel underneath Peachtree Road and at street level, turn right.  The mall is less than two blocks down.  Stores closest to this station include Crate and Barrel, Macy’s and the Apple Store.

MARTA to the Peachtree Road Race

The Peachtree Road Race is held on July 4th each year and starts  just outside the  Buckhead and Lenox MARTA Stations.  You can either:

  1. Take a gold line train to the Lenox Station and follow the  “To Mall” exit off the train platform. Walk straight out of the station and up Lenox Road.
  2. Take a red line train to the Buckhead Station and take the first set of stairs out of the station and turn left on Peachtree Road and walk about two blocks…making sure you cross over GA 400 and go by Lenox Square Mall.  If you don’t, then you are walking the wrong way.

The best place to park your car and ride the train is at the Lindbergh Station at 2424 Piedmont Avenue.  There are three free parking decks and all northbound trains from this station are one stop away from the start of the race.  Just remember to take your parking ticket with you so you can validate it inside the station on your return trip. For other good parking locations, see the link at the bottom of the page.

The end of the race is at Piedmont Park at 10th and Charles Allen.  If you need to get back to your car or other destination, the closest train station is the Midtown Station at 41 10th Street (see area map).  All northbound trains at this station go to Lindbergh and all southbound trains go to Five Points.

Other Things to Know
The trains start running at 6 a.m. on the weekend.  Be sure to purchase a roundtrip fare at the start of your trip ($4 for the 2011 race). Get a Breeze ticket if you don’t ride MARTA often, or get a reloadable plastic Breeze card if you plan to ride again in the future.
