MARTA to Draft on Taft

Draft on Taft is a yearly beer event in the residential area south of Piedmont Park.  This Midtown street festival is a fundraiser that features plenty of beer, live music and food.  Tickets are required, but includes all you can drink and eat.

The closest MARTA station is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.  From the main station exit, turn right on 10th Street then right on Charles Allen Drive.  Approximate walking time is 15 minutes.  If you don’t want to walk, board bus 36 or bus 99 at the Midtown Station … both have stops at Taft Street and 10th.  The bus ride is free if you are transferring from the train.

MARTA to Emory University Hospital

The Emory University Hospital is located on the Emory University campus at 1364 Clifton Road NE.  The nearest MARTA station is Lindbergh Center on the red/gold rail line, though there are a variety of transportation options to get to the hospital.

Two MARTA buses travel to the hospital, bus 6 from the Lindbergh Center and Inman Park stations and bus 36 from the Midtown and Avondale stations.  The free Cliff Shuttle also has a stop at the hospital.  The CCTMA route picks up passengers at the Decatur MARTA station and additional routes pick up at the North Dekalb and South Dekalb malls.

Helpful Tips

  • The quickest route is the CCTMA Cliff Shuttle from the Decatur station followed by bus 6 from Inman Park and then bus 6 departing from Lindbergh Center.
  • To maximize your commute getting back to MARTA rail on your return trip, wait at a bus stop on N. Decatur Road, which will allow you to board either bus 6 or bus 36.
  • Emory Village and Emory Point both have places to eat.

MARTA to the Piedmont Driving Club

The Piedmont Driving Club is a private club located at 1215 Piedmont Avenue next to Piedmont Park that features a swimming pool, clubhouse and fitness activities.  The closest MARTA station is Arts Center on the red/gold rail line.   Go up one level from the train platform and follow the signs to 15th Street/Buses.  Go up one more level and follow the sidewalk through the bus bay to 15th Street and turn left.  Stay on 15th Street until it dead ends at the Piedmont Driving Club (see map below).

Bus 27 also has a stop at the club.  Connect with the bus at the Midtown or Lindbergh Center station.

MARTA to the Goat Farm Arts Center

The Goat Farm Arts Center is a visual and performing arts center located at 1200 Foster Street NW. In addition to the historic 20,00 square foot facility that includes a library, cafe and five exhibition halls, there is also an organic farm on site.

The closest MARTA station is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.  Board bus 12 at the station and exit the bus at the intersection of Howell Mill Road with Huff Road.  Commute time is approximately 15 minutes.  You can also connect with the bus at most points along Howell Mill Road or at the Cumberland Transfer Center next to Cumberland Mall.

MARTA to the Cumberland Transfer Center

The Cumberland Transfer Center is located near I-285 and I-75, and is a bus connection and transfer point for Cobb Community Transit (CCT) and MARTA.  The CCT routes that depart from the Cumberland Transfer Center travel to the Marietta Transfer Center, Delk Road, Cobb Parkway, Terrill Mill Road, Windy Hill Road, South Cobb Drive, U.S. 41 and Powers Ferry Road.

To get to the Cumberland Transfer Center on MARTA, board bus 12 at the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.  Commute time is approximately 45 minutes.

MARTA to the District at Howell Mill

The District at Howell Mill is a large shopping center near West Midtown.  Major retailers include Walmart, TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, Ulta and PetSmart.  Getting here requires taking a bus — bus 12 from either the Midtown Station or the Cumberland Transfer Center near Cumberland Mall.  The commute is much shorter from Midtown, about 15 minutes.

MARTA to Midtown Promenade

Midtown Promenade is a popular shopping center at 931 Monroe Drive, across the street from the Grady High School stadium near the intersection of Monroe Drive and 10th Street.  Current tenants include Trader Joe’s, Richard’s Variety Store, Starbucks, MetroFresh, Mellow Mushroom, Kiri, UPS Store, Gatsby’s, F.R.O.G.S. Cantina, Rice Box, Independent, Highlander, Apres Diem and Landmark Midtown Art Cinema.

The closest MARTA station is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.  It is about a 20 minute walk, or take bus 36 or bus 99 from the Midtown Station.  If you plan to walk, take the central station exit off the train platform and follow the signs pointing to 10th Street at street level.  Turn right on 10th Street and walk until the street dead ends at Monroe Drive.  Turn right on Monroe to reach the shopping center.

MARTA to United Artists Tara Cinema

The United Artists Tara Cinema is located at 2345 Cheshire Bridge Road at the intersection with Lindbergh Drive, in Cheshire Square.  The closest MARTA station is the Lindbergh Center Station on the red/gold rail line.  The theater often features documentaries and artistic/indie films in addition to current blockbusters.

To get there on MARTA, board bus 6, bus 27 or bus 30 at Lindbergh Center. The ride is about six minutes and only six stops away from the station.  You can also connect with bus 6 at the Inman Park Station and bus 27 at the Midtown Station if you are coming from that part of town.

MARTA to the Dekalb Medical Center

The Dekalb Medical Center is located at 2701 N. Decatur Road, closest to the Avondale MARTA Station on the blue rail line.  The commute requires taking a bus, and there are several routes to choose from that depart from multiple stations.  The shortest commute is from either the Avondale or Decatur stations, but if you are coming from the red/gold rail line, you can board a bus at the Midtown Station to avoid transferring trains.  If you aren’t sure where to exit the bus, tell the driver your final destination.

The recommended route for those coming from the blue rail line is to exit at the Avondale Station and board the first of the two bus routes to arrive.

MARTA to the Midtown Atlanta Nightlife District

The Midtown Atlanta nightlife district centers around Crescent Avenue, and features a block full of clubs, lounges and restaurants that frequently host pub crawls and special events.  Venues include CosmoLava, Sutra Lounge, Opera, Flip Flops, Front Page News, Koo Koo Room and Ri Ra.

The closest MARTA station is Midtown on the red/gold rail line.  Take the center stairway/escalators from the train platform to street level and exit on to 10th Street.  Turn right on 10th and walk one block to Peachtree Street and turn left.  Turn left again on 11th Street and a quick right on Crescent Avenue.  Walking time is approximately 8-10 minutes.

For a shorter walk, take the Federal Reserve station exit off the train platform (closed on weekends) and walk north through the pedestrian plaza on Peachtree Walk, right on 11th and then left on Crescent.

Trains stop operating at 1 a.m., so plan for an alternate way home if you plan to be out late.

MARTA to the McCamish Pavilion

The McCamish Pavilion (formerly the Alexander Coliseum) is home to Georgia Tech basketball at 965 Fowler Street NW.  The closest MARTA station is Midtown on the red and gold rail lines. From the main station exit, turn left on 10th Street, cross over the interstate and then turn left into the venue grounds. Walking time is about 10 minutes.

MARTA to the Atlanta Food Truck Park

The Atlanta Food Truck Park is located at 1850 Howell Mill Road on the west side of Atlanta.  The closest MARTA station is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.  From Midtown, board bus 12 and exit the bus just after it goes over the interstate.  The bus runs about every 25-30 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on the weekend.  Look up schedules ahead of time or use the MARTA app or the Google Transit app on your smartphone to plan your trip.

MARTA to West Midtown/Westside Provisions

Westside Provisions is a newer Atlanta neighborhood that contains restaurants and shops in West Midtown, around the old White Provision Co. building.  The area is very urban-industrial and contains renovated buildings as well as new construction.  Some of the major destinations include Bacchanalia, Star Provisions, JCT Kitchen and Bar, Ormsby’s, West Egg Cafe, Taqueria de Sol, Yeah Burger, Osteria del Figo,  Abattoir, Compound, Northside Tavern, the White Provision condos and the retail store Anthropologie.

The area is only accessible via MARTA bus 1 or bus 12.  Board bus 1 at the Five Points Station and exit the bus after crossing 11th Street.   Or board bus 12 at the Midtown Station and exit after the bus turns left on Howell Mill Road from Brady Avenue (look for the newer highrise condo building).  The commute is about 10 minutes from either station.

MARTA to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding is located at 35 Jesse Hill Jr.  Drive SE in downtown Atlanta (see area map).  It is about a three block walk from the Georgia State MARTA station on the blue/green rail line.  From the station, follow the signs to the Jesse Hill Jr. street exit and turn left on Jesse Hill Jr. Drive.    The building is at the intersection with Coca-Cola place, and will be on the left.

Bus 99 also has a stop next to the hospital.  For easiest access, board the bus at the North Avenue or Midtown station (check schedules for departure times).

MARTA to the Peachtree Latino Festival

The Peachtree Latino Festival takes place every August, typically in Piedmont Park.  The event features live Latin music, dancing, art and vendor booths and a children’s play area.

The closest MARTA station to the festival is the Midtown Station on the red and gold rail lines.   After exiting the station, turn right on 10th Street and walk about four blocks or 15  minutes.  You can also board bus 36 or bus 99 at the Midtown Station to get a ride to the park.  Both buses travel down 10th Street.  Bus 36 departs from the Avondale Station as well, or you can also board bus 99 at the North Avenue or Georgia State Stations, you will just have a longer commute.

MARTA to the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival

The Atlanta Black Theatre Festival takes place October 4-7, 2012, near the Midtown and Arts Center MARTA stations on the red/gold rail line.   You can see 40 plays in four days at the Lowes Hotel and the 14th Street Playhouse.  Some events are free while others require purchasing a ticket.  Choose from solo and group performances, skits/improv, youth shows and after parties.

MARTA to Hyatt Atlanta Midtown

The Hyatt Atlanta Midtown is located at 125 10th Street, just slightly over a block from the Midtown MARTA Station on the red/gold rail line.  It is due to open in 2013.  Nearby attractions include the Margaret Mitchell House, Piedmont Park, Midtown nightlife and business district, Fox Theatre and Georgia Tech.

On MARTA, take the 10th Street exit out of the station and turn right (if you exit the station via the Federal Reserve, turn left).  Walk over Peachtree Street and the hotel will be  a couple buildings down on the right.

MARTA to CVS Pharmacy

If you are traveling on MARTA and need to get to a CVS Pharmacy, there are several of them located near MARTA stations.  They are listed below,  with the locations closest to a rail station listed first.

Five Point Station
There is a CVS directly above the Five Points MARTA Station, but the area is a little sketchy.  After exiting the train, follow the signs to street level, then look for the MARTA Ride Store/Peachtree Street exit.  Turn left by the Ride Store to go up an escalator to the Broad Street Plaza.  The CVS is located there.

Peachtree Center Station
There is also a CVS above the Peachtree Center Station.  Take the Harris Street/John Portman Blvd. exit off the train platform, then follow the signs to Peachtree Street East.  CVS will be just outside the station in the Peachtree Center North tower.

Decatur Station
Take the Swanton Way exit out of the station and walk straight through the bus bay.  Turn right on Commerce Street.  CVS is a block up.

Midtown Station
Take the Peachtree Place exit out of the station and turn left.  One block up at Peachtree Street turn right.  CVS is located about two blocks down at Peachtree and 6th Street.

North Avenue Station
If you regularly travel on or live near Ponce de Leon Avenue, bus 2 that departs the North Avenue Station stops at a CVS across from Ponce City Market, in the Whole Foods/Home Depot shopping center.

Georgia State Station
On the blue/green rail line, exit at the Georgia State Station and board bus 99.  The bus travels through the Atlanta Medical Center, and there is a CVS on Boulevard near Freedom Parkway.

MARTA to Morningside

Morningside is a residential Atlanta neighborhood just north of Virginia Highland.  It contains a small commercial area on N. Highland Avenue with restaurants and businesses, and on Saturday mornings a farmer’s market.  Highlights include Rosebud, Family Dog, Alon’s Bakery and Natural Body Day Spa.  The neighborhood isn’t a near a MARTA rail station, but bus 16 and bus 36 go to the neighborhood.  You can board bus 36 at the Midtown or Avondale Stations or bus 16 at Five Points.

Helpful Tips

  • Bus 36 doesn’t run very late in the evening, so plan your trip accordingly.
  • Family Dog has live music on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
  • More restaurants and shops are located south on N. Highland Avenue in the Virginia Highland neighborhood.

MARTA to A Taste of the Highlands

Virginia Highland is a popular Atlanta neighborhood that hosts “A Taste of the Highlands” each year in May at John Howell Park.  Food samples from the area restaurants and drinks are included in the ticket price.  Students rates are available and tickets go up if you purchase the day of the event.

MARTA bus 36 travels to the park, which departs from the Midtown and Avondale MARTA stations.  Bus 16 that departs from Five Points also travels near the event.  Exit bus 16 at the intersection of N. Highland and Virginia Avenue and walk west (toward Murphy’s Restaurant and not Yeah Burger) for about two blocks to reach the park.

If you want to walk or bike, the closest MARTA station is Midtown, and it is a 30 minute walk from the station. Turn right on 10th Street from the Midtown Station and walk until the road dead ends at Monroe Drive.  Turn right on Monroe then a quick left onto Virginia Avenue, which goes up a steep hill (see map below).

MARTA to the Steamhouse Oysterfest

The Steamhouse Oysterfest is a yearly outdoor block party around the Steamhouse Lounge at 1051 West Peachtree St NW.  The event features two days of live music and oyster buckets. The closest MARTA station is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.   It is a relatively short walk.  From the main station exit, turn left on 10th Street then right at the first stoplight on West Peachtree Street.  The restaurant is one block up the street.

If you need to park and ride MARTA, a good option is the Lindbergh Center Station, just two stops away.  There are several parking garages for daily parking.  Be sure to take your parking ticket with you so you can validate it in the Lindbergh station on your way back to your car.

MARTA to L.A. Fitness

There are several MARTA-accessible L.A. Fitness locations around Atlanta.  See below for the list of gyms, with the easiest destinations listed first.

L.A. Fitness Perimeter Point
Take the red rail line (North Springs) to the Sandy Springs Station.  The gym is next to the station in a shopping center at 1155 Mount Vernon Highway.

L.A. Fitness Midtown
Take any red or gold line train to the North Avenue Station or Midtown Station.  Turn right on West Peachtree Street from North Avenue and walk to 5th Street and turn left and walk a block to the gym (75 5th Street).  Or from Midtown, take the Peachtree Place exit out of the station and turn right.  At West Peachtree Street, turn left and walk to 5th Street and turn right.

L.A. Fitness Atlantic Station
Take any red or gold line train to the Arts Center Station and follow the signs to the buses/15th Street exit.  In the bus area is a free shuttle to Atlantic Station.  Exit at the main retail center.  The gym is next to the movie theater.  Bus 37 also departs from the station and travels there.

L.A. Fitness Buckhead
Located at 3232 Peachtree Road NE, it is about a 15 minute walk from the Buckhead Station to the gym.  Take a red line train to the station and after going through the fare gate, take the first set of stairs out of the station or use the elevator just beyond the stairwell.  Turn right at street level and walk about three blocks.  The gym is located below the Marshall’s department store.  From the station exit you can also board bus 110 if you prefer not to walk.

L.A. Fitness Ansley Mall
From the Lindbergh Center or Midtown Station, board bus 27 to get to Ansley Mall.  The trip is shorter from the Midtown Station.  The bus runs in front of the shopping center where the gym is located.  Exit near the stoplight where Publix and Starbucks are located.

MARTA to the BeltLine Eastside Trail

The BeltLine is Atlanta’s hopeful light-rail project that operate in a loop around intown Atlanta neighborhoods using existing rail beds.  It will also include trails, the first of which will be the Eastside Trail, scheduled to open in 2012 and run from near the King Memorial MARTA Station to Piedmont Park.

MARTA currently crosses this trail in several places.  Choose from:

  • King Memorial Station – at street level turn right and walk about two blocks along Dekalb Avenue for the south end of the trail.
  • Five Points and Candler Park Stations – board bus 3 on weekdays to reach the Eastside Trail in the Inman Park neighborhood.  If getting on the bus at Five Points, make sure the destination of the bus is to the Candler Park Station.  Exit the bus around Krog Street and Serpas.  The bus will literally go over the trail.
  • North Avenue, Candler Park and Decatur Stations – board bus 2 to connect with the Eastside Trail at Ponce de Leon Avenue and Ponce City Market.  The bus travels underneath the rail bed and a new pedestrian ramp will be created there. Exit by the huge brick building at the stoplight (across the street is Whole Foods/Home Depot).
  • Midtown StationBus 36 and 99 have stops next to the Eastside Trail, which runs along Park Tavern and Piedmont Park.  Exit around 10th Street and Monroe Drive by the Grady High School stadium.
  • Inman Park Station – A long walk or a pleasant bike ride, exit on the Inman Park side of the station and walk past the bus bay at street level and keep walking straight ahead on Edgewood Avenue.  Turn right on Krog Street, which is about six blocks down.  From Krog, walk another two blocks.

MARTA to the Midtown Arts Cinema

The Midtown Arts Cinema is a neighborhood movie theater located at 931 Monroe Drive, across from Grady High School and Piedmont Park.  The closest MARTA station is Midtown on the red/gold rail line.  You can take the 10th Street exit out of the station and turn right (if coming up via the Federal reserve tunnel, turn left), and walk about 20 minutes down 10th Street where it dead ends at Monroe Drive.  Turn right on Monroe and left into the Trader Joes shopping center.  In the back is the theater.  Wine are beer are available for purchase.

If you don’t want to walk, you can board bus 36 or bus 99 at the Midtown Station.  Both have stops near the theater (exit by Trader Joes and Starbucks).  The bus ride is no more than five minutes.  Bus 99 also picks up passengers at the Georgia State station and in part of the GSU campus.  If you plan to take the bus back to the station, be advised that bus 36 stops early in the evening.

Nearby restaurants/bars include Metro Fresh, F.R.O.G.S. Cantina, Mellow Mushroom, Jersey Mike’s Subs, The Highlander, Apres Diem, Rice Box, Desi Spice and Royal Orchid Thai.

MARTA to the Loews Hotel

The Loews Hotel is a luxury highrise located at 1065 Peachtree Street NE, just a couple blocks away from the Midtown MARTA Station.  It features Eleven, a contemporary restaurant, a lounge and Exhale spa.

To get there on MARTA, take any red or gold line train to the Midtown Station.  Take the main exit out of the station and turn right on 10th Street.  At the first stoplight, cross over the street then immediately turn left to walk north on Peachtree Street.  The hotel is about a block down on the right.

Nearby restaurants include Ra Sushi, Oceanaire Seafood Room, Ri Ra Irish Pub, Joe’s on Juniper, Einstein’s (not the bagel place) and Piola. Nearby attractions include the Federal Reserve, Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, 14th Street Playhouse and Piedmont Park.

MARTA to Marriott Residence Inn Midtown

The Marriott Residence Inn Midtown is located near the Midtown Station at 1041 West Peachtree St.  It is less than a five minute walk from the station. Take any red or gold line train to the Midtown Station and take the 10th Street exit out of the station and turn left. Walk to the first stoplight, which is West Peachtree Street, and turn right.

Area attractions include Georgia Tech, Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, Federal Reserve and the many restaurants and nightclubs along Crescent Avenue and West Peachtree Street, including Steel Restaurant and Lounge, J. Christophers, Marlow’s Tavern, Charlie G’s 11th Street Pub, Ra Sushi, Ri Ra Irish Pub, CosmoLava and Sutra Lounge.

MARTA to the Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes

The Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes is an annual event during the winter holiday season and provides an inside look at the homes in the neighborhood.  The 2011 dates are Dec. 10 and 11 and tickets are $25 in advance, which includes food tastings from local restaurants.  Ticket pick-up and sales will be at the YWCA at 957 N. Highland Avenue.  To get there on MARTA, choose from two bus routes:

  • Bus 16 stops in front of the YWCA and goes through the entire neighborhood on N. Highland Avenue.  You can get on the bus at the Five Points Station or along N. Highland Avenue from Freedom Parkway north to Johnson Road.  The route ends at Loehman’s Plaza off Briarcliff and North Druid Hills Road.
  • Bus 36 departs from the Midtown and Avondale Stations and stops at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and N. Highland Avenue.  Exit the bus and walk south (towards Yeah Burger) about one block.

MARTA to the Ferst Center for the Arts

The Ferst Center for the Arts is located on the Georgia Tech campus at 350 Ferst Dr NW.  There are two options for getting there on MARTA:

Take a red or gold line train to the North Avenue Station and board bus 26.  Exit the bus at the intersection of North Avenue and Cherry Street.  A Hampton Inn will at the intersection on the left side of the street.  Walk north on Cherry Street, then left on Ferst Drive.  Follow the road around to the Student Center, which has a pyramid-shaped sculpture sticking out at the entrance to its parking lot.  Turn right into the parking lot and walking straight ahead to reach the Ferst Center.  The Student Center will be on your right, and just behind it is the Ferst Center. Walking time is 10-15 minutes (see walking map).

The other option, which involves less walking, is to board the free Tech Trolley at the Midtown Station at the Peachtree Place station exit. Tell the driver you want to exit at the Student Center, which is one stop before the transit hub at the end of the line (see trolley route map). Follow the same directions above by walking through the student center parking lot to reach the Ferst Center.

MARTA to Taste of Atlanta

Taste of Atlanta is a annual event showcasing chefs and restaurants around the city.  Tickets start at $25 in advance and include a number of free samples, live cooking demonstrations, family area and more. The 2012 dates are Oct. 5-7, and the event will take place at Tech Square in Midtown.

Tech Square is about equally distant between the North Avenue and Midtown Stations on the red/gold rail lines. For the shortest walk, take the Fox Theatre exit out of the North Avenue station.  After exiting the fare gates, walk straight ahead through the shopping mall and exit on 3rd Street.  Turn left on 3rd then right on West Peachtree.  Tech Square is less than two blocks up on the left at 5th Street.

When exiting at the Midtown station, take the Peachtree Place exit out of the station and turn right.  At the first intersection, turn left on West Peachtree Street and walk down to 5th Street.

  • For an easy MARTA adventure, park at the Lindbergh Center Station and take any southbound train to the Midtown or North Avenue Station.
  • Cypress Street Pint and Plate is a cool place to hang before or after the event, or catch some football at Taco Mac or Hudson Grille by the Midtown Station.
  • Trains run every 20 minutes on the weekend.  Look up schedules in advance or use Google Transit on your smartphone to know the next arrival time.

MARTA to the Atlanta Arts Festival

The Atlanta Arts Festival takes place in Piedmont Park on the second weekend after Labor Day. The festival features an artist market, live music and food around the active oval near 14th Street and Piedmont Avenue.  The nearest MARTA stations are Arts Center and Midtown on the red/gold rail line.

To get there on MARTA, you choose between either station, though you will the option to ride three buses to the park at the Midtown location.  The Arts Center Station will put you a little closer to the festival market if you are walking.  From the Arts Center Station, take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station and turn left on West Peachtree Street.  Walk one block and turn left on 14th Street and take that all the way to the park, about three blocks.

Or, you can exit at the Midtown Station and take 10th Street down to the park.  It is approximately a 10 minute walk to the edge of the park, and you’ll have to walk an additional 5-10 minutes to reach the artist market.  Exit the Midtown station on 10th Street and turn right and walk about 3 blocks.

Three buses will also put you next to the park if you don’t want to walk the 10-15 minute distance from or to the train. All buses depart from the Midtown station:

  • Bus 36 goes down 10th Street and then to Virginia Highland and Emory
  • Bus 99 also goes down 10th Street and then south on Monroe Drive
  • Bus 27 has a stop just outside the 14th Street park entrance, which is right next to the festival.  You can also board this bus at the Lindbergh Center Station.

MARTA to the Emory Village

The Emory Village is located next to the Emory University campus on N. Decatur Road.  Two MARTA bus routes travel here:

  • Bus 6 departs from the Inman Park and Lindbergh Stations
  • Bus 36 departs from the Midtown and Avondale Stations

The Village features a CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks and restaurants such as Doc Chey’s Noodle House, Saba, Rise N Dine, Panera Bread and the Wonderful World of Burgers.

  • Midtown
    Yumbii stops at 10th and Peachtree Street, one block from the Midtown MARTA Station.  Take the 10th Street exit out of the station and turn right.
  • Arts Center/Colony Square
    Follow the signs to the 15th Street exit at the Arts Center Station and turn left on 15th Street after walking through the bus bay.  Walk a block for food truck stops at the Woodruff Arts Center and the plaza near Colony Square
  • Atlantic Station
    Take the Atlantic Station Shuttle or bus 37 from the Arts Center Station.
  • Virginia Highland
    Near the CVS on N. Highland, take bus 16 from Five Points or Loehman’s Plaza, or bus 2 from the North Avenue Station and exit at Ponce and N. Highland and walk north.
  • Inman Park/Stove Works
    Take bus 3 from the Candler Park or Five Points Station.  Exit at Irwin and Krog Streets.
  • Buckhead/Westside
    Take bus 12 from the Midtown Station or from the Cumberland Transfer Center to the Howell Mill Food Park at Howell Mill and Collier Road.

10 Easiest Destinations to Get to on MARTA

MARTA to Taste and Tour of Cheshire Bridge

The Taste and Tour of Cheshire Bridge is a walking food tasting event that will take place July 20-21 2011. The festival includes a free food sample at participating restaurants (including Woodfire Grill), coupons and raffle tickets. Prices are $15.00 per person per day or $25.00 per person for both days. After July 1, the price increases to $20 per day or $35 for both days.  Children are free.

MARTA will be the best option for getting to the festival.  Bus 27 travels the entire length of Cheshire Bridge Road and is the best bus route for the event.  The bus departs from the Lindbergh and Midtown Stations on the red/gold rail line.  Lindbergh has free daily parking decks, which makes it a great park and ride spot.  Once at the festival, a free shuttle will also be available to travel to the different restaurants.

You can also get to Cheshire Bridge Road via bus 6 and bus 30 at the Lindbergh Station. Exit near the Varsity Jr. and CVS, which are at the intersection of Lindbergh Drive and Cheshire Bridge Road.

For easiest commuting, park your car or ride the train to the Lindbergh Station and board the first bus that arrives (6, 27 or 30).

MARTA to the Renaissance Hotel

The Renaissance Hotel is located in midtown Atlanta in the former Palomar Hotel location at 866 W. Peachtree Street.  The closest MARTA station is the Midtown Station, but the hotel is also accessible from the North Avenue Station (see area map).

For the shortest walk, take a red or gold line train to the Midtown Station and exit on to Peachtree Place and turn right.  At the first intersection turn left on W. Peachtree Street and walk about two blocks.

The hotel features a rooftop lounge and Briza, an Italian restaurant. Nearby restaurants include Pacci, Ecco, Vortex Bar and Grill and Gordon Biersch Brewery.  Attractions in walking distance include Tech Square and the Fox Theatre.

MARTA to Trader Joe’s

There are two Trader Joe’s grocery stores close to MARTA.  Choose from either the Midtown or Buckhead location:

  • Exit at the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line, take the 10th Street exit out of the station and turn right.  Walk about four blocks to Monroe Drive and turn right.  You can also board bus 99 or bus 36 from the Midtown Station – there are bus stops out in front of the store.
  • Exit at the Buckhead Station on the red rail line and take the first set of stairs out of the station to street level.  Wait there for bus 110, or turn right and walk about 15 minutes.  Trader Joe’s is on Peachtree Road, after the intersection with Piedmont Avenue, across from a large church.

MARTA to Park Tavern

Park Tavern is located at the edge of Piedmont Park and offers plenty of outdoor seating and cheap beer on rainy days.  Regular events include Unplugged in the Park, Summer Sunsets in the Park with Yacht Rock, Oyster and Crawfish Festival, OysterfestBlues, Brews and BBQ Fest, Lucky Fest and various other holiday-themed and fundraising events.

The closest MARTA station to Park Tavern is the Midtown Station. Take a red or gold line train the the station and from the main station exit, turn right on 10th Street and walk about four blocks, or 20 minutes (see walking map).

You can also take a bus 99 or bus 36 from the Midtown Station.  Bus 99 has a stop right across the street from the tavern.  If coming from bus 36, exit at the stoplight at 10th and Charles Allen.

MARTA to Ansley Park

Built between 1904 and 1930, the Ansley Park Historic District is a neighborhood and not a park,  although there are several greenspaces that provide playgrounds and water features throughout the area.  The neighborhood is known for its large stately homes on winding, tree-lined streets and has a golf course in the north.

The closest MARTA station is the Arts Center Station on the red and gold rail lines.  Take the 15th Street exit out of the station, which is up one level from the fare gates.  Walk down the pedestrian sidewalk through the bus bay and turn left on 15th Street.  Keep walking straight ahead, crossing over Peachtree Street to reach the district.  See area map for navigation.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is on the far side of the neighborhood if you want to combine a neighborhood walking tour with the gardens.

Another option is to board bus 27 from the Midtown Station and exit at along Piedmont Avenue anywhere between 15th Street and Avery Drive.

MARTA to Ansley Mall

Ansley Mall is an outdoor shopping center near Piedmont Park.  The major stores are Publix, Kroger, CVS, Pier 1 Imports and Cook’s Warehouse.  Smaller businesses offer discount nutrition, running/tennis apparel, shoe repair, bath/body products, furniture and pet supplies.  Services include L.A. Fitness Gym, Bank of America branch and a laundromat.  If you are hungry, choose from Moe’s, Panera Bread, Cheesesteak Place, Starbucks and a new burger joint.

Getting to Ansley Mall requires taking bus 27 from either the Midtown or Lindbergh Station.  Exit the bus near the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive.

Nearby restaurants include Hobnob, Ru San’s and Cowtippers.

MARTA to the Biltmore

Built in 1924, the Biltmore Hotel was once the height of elegance in Atlanta, and today the former hotel has been converted into ballroom space for events, offices and luxury condos (Biltmore House).

The Biltmore is located about half-way in between the North Avenue and Midtown Stations at 817 West Peachtree Street, although it is a slightly shorter walk from North Avenue (see area map).

From North Avenue, take the Fox Theatre (not Georgia Tech) exit out of the station.  After going through the fare gate, walk straight ahead through the small indoor shopping mall and turn left on 3rd Street.  The first intersection is with West Peachtree Street.  Turn right and walk another two blocks.

From Midtown, take the Peachtree Place exit out of the station and turn right.  Turn left at the first intersection on to West Peachtree and walk about three blocks.

5 Most Walkable MARTA Stations

MARTA to Publix

There are several Publix grocery stores that are relatively close to MARTA stations.  Below they are listed with the closest stores listed first.

  • Midtown Publix
    Take a red or gold line train to the Midtown station and take the Peachtree Place exit out of the station and turn right.  Publix is a block down on the left.
  • North Avenue/Ponce Publix
    Exit the North Avenue station and turn left on North Avenue.  Walk about two blocks to reach the grocery.  Or take bus 2 from the station to ride part of the way (exit at North Avenue  and Piedmont Avenue).  Or continue on the bus to Ponce and N. Highland where there is another Publix.
  • Buckhead Publix
    Take a gold line train to the Lenox Station and take the exit opposite the one pointing “To Mall” off the train platform.  At street level veer left then make a quick right on Oak Valley Road and walk two blocks. A second Publix is located near Peachtree Battle.  Take bus 110 outside the first stairwell exit out of the Buckhead station.

MARTA to the Dekalb Farmer’s Market

Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market is one of the biggest indoor markets in the city, located at 3000 E. Ponce De Leon Avenue in Decatur.  It is located closest to the Avondale MARTA station, but a long walk.  It is best to take bus 36 from the Avondale station, or connect with the bus at the Midtown station, in Virginia Highland on N. Highland Avenue between Virginia Avenue and East Rock Springs or next to Emory on N. Decatur Road.

MARTA to the Michael C. Carlos Museum

The Michael C. Carlos Museum is located on the Emory University campus and is full of artifacts from the ancient world.

There are two buses that travel near the museum, bus 6 and bus 36.  Bus 6 departs from the Inman Park and Lindbergh stations, while bus 36 from Midtown and Avondale.  Regardless of which bus you ride,  plan to exit the bus at N. Decatur Road and Dowman Drive/Oxford Road, which is one of the main entrances to the campus (see area map).

Keep left after entering the campus and turn right at the second street to reach the museum.

MARTA to the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival

The new Atlanta Food and Wine Festival takes place in several locations in Midtown Atlanta in late May. The closest MARTA station is the Midtown Station on the red and gold rail lines.

To get to the festival on MARTA, take a red or gold train to the Midtown Station.  For the Welcome Center, take the 10th Street exit out of the station and turn right and walk one block to Peachtree Street.  Turn left on Peachtree Street and then right on 11th Street and walk one block to Juniper.  Tasting Tents are directly next to the station at 11th Street and Peachtree Walk, adjacent to the Federal Reserve.

MARTA to the Federal Reserve Museum

The Federal Reserve Monetary Museum is open Monday-Friday 9am-4pm for groups smaller than 10 people.  Otherwise groups must schedule a tour.  Conveniently, the Federal Reserve is right next to the Midtown station, and even has its own station exit.

Take any red or gold line train to the Midtown station and take the tunnel exit at the far north end of the station.  Once you get to street level you’ll be right next to the Federal Reserve.  Walk east on 10th Street toward the white marble building and turn left on Peachtree Street for the main entrance.

MARTA to the Regency Suites Hotel

The Regency Suites Hotel in midtown Atlanta at 975 West Peachtree Street is one of the closest, if not the closest hotel to a MARTA station.  Take any red or gold line train to the Midtown MARTA station and follow the signs to the 10th Street exit once you are at street level.  Turn left on 10th Street and the hotel is less than a block down.  All trains leaving the airport stop at the Midtown station, making it an easy destination for travelers.

MARTA to Hotel Midtown

MARTA to the Atlanta Medical Center

The Atlanta Medical Center is located at 303 Parkway Drive, which is about a 20 minute walk from the Civic Center station on the red/gold rail line (see walking/area map).  It is a straight walk down Ivan Allen Jr./Ralph McGill Blvd.  After exiting the station, head south on West Peachtree Street toward downtown and turn left on Ivan Allen Jr.

You can also choose between two bus routes:

  • Bus 99 from the Midtown, North Avenue (weekday non-rush hour only) or Georgia State station.  The bus route travels down Boulevard with stops at the Medical Center.
  • Bus 16 departs from Five Points and travels along Ralph McGill with a stop at Parkway Drive and Boulevard.

MARTA to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre

The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre is located near Cumberland Mall, along the route of bus 12.  Bus 12 departs from the Midtown station on the red/gold line and travels north on Howell Mill and onto Northside and Cobb Parkway.  Exit the bus just after the intersection of Cobb Parkway with Riverside Parkway.  There will be a Sam Ash guitar store on the right side of bus.

After getting off the bus, walk through the parking lot to reach the performing arts center.  Approximate walking time is about 8 minutes.

MARTA to the Piedmont Park Green Concert

green concert logoOn Oct. 15, 2010 the Eagles will perform in Piedmont Park.  As a green concert, concert goers are asked to take MARTA to the event, especially as parking is limited.  See below for a summary of MARTA directions, or view the complete MARTA options for the Green Concert, including parking tips, on Examiner.com.

There are two stations near Piedmont Park:  Midtown and Arts Center on the north-south (red/gold) rail line.  Both will involve a 15-20 minute walk (see walking directions).  Exiting at the Arts Center will put you closer to the Park Drive rear concert entrance, while exiting at the Midtown station will put you closer to the 10th Street/Charles Allen entrance.

Additionally, there are several bus options from the Midtown station that can reduce your walking time, routes 27, 36 and 99.  As long as you ride the train and tap your Breeze card on the blue circle when exiting the rail station, you can ride the bus for free.

MARTA to Grady High School

Grady High School is near the Midtown MARTA station on the red/gold rail line.  It is about a 15-20 minute walk — take the 10th Street exit out of the station and turn right on 10th and walk about four blocks.

There are bus options as well:

  • Bus 36 departs from  Midtown and Avondale
  • Bus 99 departs from Midtown and Georgia State
