MARTA to the Jackson Street Bridge

The Jackson Street Bridge is one of the off-the-beaten-path attractions in Atlanta. The bridge itself isn’t the focus, but rather the skyline view from the bridge. It’s a great spot to take a picture and the view also has a claim to fame as one of the shots from the TV series “The Walking Dead”.

There are several ways to get to the bridge on transit:

Atlanta Streetcar

Board the Atlanta Streetcar at the Peachtree Center MARTA station’s Ellis Street/Peachtree Street East exit. Ride the streetcar to the King Memorial Historic Site, getting off at the Ebenezer Baptist Church on Jackson Street. Walk north on Jackson toward the Horizon Sanctuary for about two blocks to reach the bridge.

Walk from King Memorial

Cross over Decatur Street in front of the King Memorial MARTA station and walk north on Hilliard Street next to the apartment buildings for about a block. Turn right on Edgewood Avenue then left on Jackson and walk another three blocks. Walking time is about 16 minutes. The walk is in a very urban area, so use caution.

Walk from Peachtree Center

Take any red or gold line train to get to Peachtree Center MARTA station, then follow the signs to Harris Street/Peachtree Street East to exit the station. Turn right on Peachtree Street and right at the first intersection on to John Portman Blvd./Harris Street. Walk three blocks and turn left on Piedmont Avenue, making sure to cross the street first. Turn right at the next intersection to reach the Freedom Park Trail. Take that to Jackson Street and turn right (see map). Walking time is 20 minutes, and the trail provides a good option whether you are walking or biking.

Bus

Bus 3 travels near the bridge on weekdays only. Board the bus at the Five Points MARTA station (heading east toward Candler Park) for the shortest commute. Signal for the bus to stop when the bus starts turning left on Jackson Street. Get off the bus and walk straight north for a block to reach the bridge.

All seven days a week bus 16 also stops about a block away. Connect with the bus at the Five Points MARTA station and exit at the Atlanta Medical Center at Parkway Drive. Turn right to walk south on Parkway, which turns into Jackson at the bridge.

MARTA to Cumming

Cumming is about 40 miles north of downtown Atlanta near Lake Lanier. It is MARTA accessible thanks to a connection with a regional bus service, GRTA Xpress route 400. The bus service is limited and only runs Monday-Friday to/from the Cumming Park and Ride just off GA 400 exit 14 at 163 North Old Atlanta Road, Cumming, 30040.

As far as connections with MARTA, the bus departs from the North Springs and North Avenue MARTA stations (North Springs is the closest station to Cumming). There are additional departure/drop off locations within two blocks of the Five Points and Peachtree Center stations.

GRTA Xpress fares are cash only or can be deducted from a MARTA Breeze card.  It is more expensive to travel from downtown to Cumming ($4 one way). It costs $3 one way to travel from North Springs to Cumming.

Uber is another good option. Request a car at the North Springs station and use the promo code MARTAGuide to get a free first ride up to $20.

Fairlie-Poplar Historic District

MARTA to the Fairlie-Poplar Historic District

The Fairlie-Poplar Historic District in downtown Atlanta was built in the late 1800s as “Atlanta’s new modern fireproof business district”. In between the Five Points and Peachtree Center MARTA stations, this area of downtown has the most historic and renovated buildings in the city.

In addition to a variety of architectural styles, Fairlie-Poplar also has numerous places to get a quick bite to eat, office buildings and part of the Georgia State University campus. Several television shows and movies have been filmed here as well.

There are a few apartments and condos in Fairlie-Poplar as well if you are considering a move to downtown Atlanta. While there is easy access to MARTA rail and the ability to walk to jobs in the nearby area, retail and grocery stores are currently lacking. However, the new Atlanta Streetcar that travels through the area stops at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market as a way to get groceries easily on transit. You can also find CVS Pharmacy outside both the nearby transit stations.

From Five Points

Take the Broad Street Plaza exit out of the station near the MARTA RideStore/Peachtree Street exit and walk straight through the plaza to enter Broad Street, which is part of the district.  Walk several blocks north or to the west (toward Centennial Olympic Park) to view the entire area. You can also take the Forsyth Street exit out of the station and turn right.

From Peachtree Center

Take the Ellis Street exit off the train platform and follow the signs to Peachtree Street West/Public Library after walking through the fare gate.  At street level walk straight ahead toward the library to enter Forsyth Street.  Fairlie Popular stretches a couple blocks in several directions.

Carter Presidential Center

MARTA to the Carter Center and Jimmy Carter Presidential Library

The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum as well as the Carter Center are located at 441 Freedom Parkway, just outside downtown Atlanta.  The library features exhibits and special events while the Carter Center is a human rights organization. There is a bus stop right next to both buildings making it fairly easy to get to.  You can also walk 20-25 minutes from the Inman Park MARTA station on the blue/green rail line.

Via Bus
Bus 16 is the route that goes to the Carter Center, which you can board at the Five Points station on Alabama Street or along N. Highland Avenue. Once on the bus, you can let your driver know your destination. The Carter Center is located on a tree-filled hill off a parkway (if departing from downtown, the route merges on what looks to be an interstate ramp). For your return trip, you’ll have to wait for bus 16 on the opposite side of the Carter Center.

Screenshot 2014-03-28 at 11.48.11 PM

Walking
The walk to the Carter Center from the Inman Park Station is very pleasant, with the option to view historic Victorian homes and parks, though the route is hilly.  Take a blue or green line train to the Inman Park Station and keep right after exiting the fare gate, following the signs to Inman Park.  At street level, turn right and walk along the parking lot to reach a sidewalk marked “The PATH”.  Turn left on the PATH and follow it all the way to the Carter Center.
