MARTA to the Children’s Healthcare Christmas Parade
Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 is the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Christmas Parade. The start of the parade will take place just outside the N1 Peachtree Center station on the north/south rail line. Take any north/south train and any exit out of the station for the parade at street level.
The Five Points station is another option on the parade route. Ride any train to Five Points and take the Peachtree Street exit out of the station and turn left onto Peachtree. Walk about one block to reach Marietta Street to view the parade.

Otherwise, if you are coming from the north or south, you can also exit at the Peachtree Center Station. Follow the signs pointing to the Ellis Street/public library exit. After exiting the turnstiles, turn left and either take the elevator or escalator up to street level. At street level, turn left to walk along Peachtree Street. Bus 16 is the route that goes to the Carter Center, which you can board at the Five Points station on Alabama Street as well as any stop on Peachtree Street from the Five Points station north to Auburn Avenue along Woodruff Park. You can also catch the bus about a block away from the N1 Peachtree Center station (see area map).
The recommended route would be to take a north/south line train to the Peachtree Center station and follow the signs to the Harris Street exit. After exiting the fare gate, tap your Breeze Card and follow the signs to Peachtree Street east. At street level, turn right to walk along Peachtree Street then make the first right onto Harris Street and walk one block to Peachtree Center Avenue. Look for any bus stop sign on Peachtree Center Avenue and wait there for the bus. It is best to check schedules ahead of time as routes can be upwards of 20-30 minutes apart.
Once on the bus, you can let your driver know your destination. You will know you are getting close to the Carter Center when it looks like the bus is getting on an interstate ramp. Once the bus goes around a large curve and enters the residential area, the stop for the Carter Center is next. To return, you’ll have to wait for bus 16 on the opposite side of the Carter Center (see bus stop map).

Keep walking straight ahead to enter Forsyth Street, walk past the public library and the Rialto will be at the next intersection at 80 Forsyth Street.
The other option is to take the Forsyth Street exit out of the Five Points station and turn right and walk about three blocks, but the area is a little less safe.

Five Points MARTA Station
The Five Points MARTA station is located in the middle of downtown Atlanta at 30 Alabama Street. It has station entrances off of Alabama, Peachtree and Forsyth Streets (see area map). Nearby landmarks include Georgia State University, Underground Atlanta, Woodruff Park, Fairlie-Poplar Historic District and City Hall.
Unlike all the other stations it has no number associated with it because it is the central point from where all train stations are numbered. It is also the only station that has access to both the north-south and east-west rail lines and is two stories deep underground, with the red/yellow lines that travel north and south on the lowest level and the blue/green lines that travel east and west just below street level.
All trains stop at Five Points and there are numerous bus routes that connect with this station, which travel to destinations such as Sweet Auburn, Virginia Highlands, MLK Jr. Drive, Turner Field, southeast Atlanta and Grant Park/Zoo Atlanta. In addition there is access to the Braves Shuttle and an express route to Lithonia.
Rail commute times to the end of the lines are as follows:
- 16 minutes from Five Points to the Airport
- 9 minutes from Five Points to H.E. Holmes
- 11 minutes from Five Points to Bankhead
- 20 minutes from Five Points to Indian Creek
- 24 minutes from Five Points to Doraville
- 27 minutes from Five Points to North Springs

MARTA to the Sweet Auburn Festival
The Sweet Auburn Festival takes place on Auburn Avenue, from Courtland Avenue to the King Center (see area map and festival map). The two closest MARTA stations to the event are the Georgia State and King Memorial stations. If you are coming from the north or south rail lines, you must exit at Five Points and follow the signs to the Eastbound platform. All eastbound trains go to both stations.
Expect to walk slightly less than 15 minutes to get to the festival from either station. Other things to consider: the walk from the Georgia State station is through the Georgia State University campus, (thus typically safer, though slightly longer) and the walk from King Memorial is through a newly developed area with apartment buildings.
- If you exit at Georgia State, take the Piedmont Avenue exit out of the station and turn right onto Piedmont. Walk about three blocks and you’ll reach the end of the festival near the Calhoun stage.
- If you exit at the King Memorial station, at street level cross over Decatur Street/Dekalb Avenue and walk north along Hillard Street.
You can also take bus 99 from the Midtown or Georgia State stations or bus 3 from Five Points or Candler Park (weekdays only) to get there as well.
