MARTA to the Trolley Barn

Designed in 1880, the Trolley Barn is just that — a historic building at 963 Edgewood Avenue NE that once housed Atlanta’s streetcars.  Today it is used as a special event space and in addition to the main hall, there is a serving kitchen, an 800 square-foot mezzanine overlooking the hall, a 2,400 square-foot general purpose room underneath the main hall and a large outdoor brick patio.  It is also home to the yearly Butterfly Ball that takes place during the Inman Park Festival.

The closest MARTA station is Inman Park on the blue/green rail line, which is literally just down the street.  If coming from Five Points (and the red/gold line), board an Eastbound train marked Indian Creek or Candler Park at Five Points.  Once at the Inman Park station, follow the signs pointing to Inman Park after exiting the fare gate and at street level, keep walking straight ahead from the stairway/escalators along the bus bay to enter Edgewood Avenue.  The Trolley Barn is about a block down on the left.

For those who wish to walk, the King Memorial Station is the closest to the neighborhood.  It is about a 15 minute walk to the edge of the neighborhood, but a walk you’ll likely want to do in daylight.  Turn left/south onto Grant Street after exiting the station and going down the stairs.  Turn left again on Memorial Drive and walk past the cemetery to reach the neighborhood.  You’ll also walk by other restaurants en route, including Young Augustine’s, The Republic, Tin Lizzy’s, Six Feet Under, Ria’s Bluebird and Mibarrio.

MARTA to Target

There are several Target stores that are accessible to MARTA:

E3 Inman Park
After exiting the fare gates, turn right, following the signs pointing to Inman Park.  At street level turn right and walk east (away from downtown) along Dekalb Avenue.  At the first stop light, turn left and follow the street ramp down and around to Moreland Avenue and turn right.  The shopping center with Target will be at the second light.  You can also walk on the Reynoldstown side of the tracks, but it isn’t as safe.

N5 Arts Center
Take the free Atlantic Station shuttle from the Arts Center Station into Atlantic Station.  Exit at 17th and State Street, turn right onto State Street on the Atlantic Station shop side of the street.  Target is at the end of the street.

N6 Lindbergh
Take the northern most exit out of the station, following the signs to Morosgo Drive.  Keep walking straight ahead once you exit the station to walk down Lindbergh Lane.  Turn right onto Sidney Marcus when you come to the T.  Walk about two blocks and Target will be in a shopping center on the right.  Look for the Target sign marking a stairwell that will take you underground to the store.  Be advised that the storefront is not visible from the street as it is on the lower level of a parking deck.

NE7 Lenox
Take the main exit out of the station and walk straight ahead alongside Lenox Road.  Turn right at Pier One/Kingsboro Road , then left at the next intersection, which is Oak Valley Road.  Walk about a block and then turn right into the parking garage marked Target/Publix.  Walk straight to the back of the garage to reach Target.

N9 Dunwoody
Target is just north of Perimeter Mall.  After exiting the fare gates, turn right to walk down the corridor.  Go down the flight of stairs and turn right, then a quick left alongside the road beside Perimeter Mall.  By walking straight through the parking lot, you can reach the shopping center with Target, located at roughly at Perimeter Center West and Perimeter Center Place.

MARTA to the Carter Center

The Carter Center is just outside downtown in a residential area and features a permanent Jimmy Carter exhibit as well as rotating exhibits.  There is a bus stop right next to the Carter Center, making it fairly easy to get to.  It is also about a 20-25 minute walk from the Inman Park Station on the blue/green rail line.

Via Bus
Bus 16 is the route that goes to the Carter Center, which you can board at the Five Points station on Alabama Street as well as any stop on Peachtree Street from the Five Points station north to Auburn Avenue along Woodruff Park.  You can also catch the bus about  a block away from the Peachtree Center Station (see area map).

The recommended route would be to take  a north/south line train to the Peachtree Center station and follow the signs to the Harris Street exit.  After exiting the fare gate, tap your Breeze Card and follow the signs to Peachtree Street east.  At street level, turn right to walk along Peachtree Street then make the first right onto Harris Street and walk one block to Peachtree Center Avenue.  Look for any bus stop sign on Peachtree Center Avenue and wait there for the bus.  It is best to check schedules ahead of time as routes can be upwards of 20-30 minutes apart.

Once on the bus, you can let your driver know your destination.  You will know you are getting close to the Carter Center when it looks like the bus is getting on an interstate ramp.  Once the bus goes around a large curve and enters the residential area, the stop for the Carter Center is next.  To return, you’ll have to wait for bus 16 on the opposite side of the Carter Center (see bus stop map).

Walking
The walk to the Carter Center from the Inman Park Station is very pleasant, with the option to view historic Victorian homes and parks, though the route is hilly.  Take a blue or green line train to the Inman Park Station and keep right after exiting the fare gate, following the signs to Inman Park.  At street level, turn right and walk along the parking lot to reach a sidewalk marked “The PATH”.   Turn left on the PATH and follow it all the way to the Carter Center.  The sidewalk winds through rolling hills, and you will go past a playground then cross over Euclid Avenue, Lake Avenue and N. Highland Avenue.  Keep right as the path splits beyond N. Highland.  The top of the hill in the trees is the Carter Center (see walking map).

MARTA to the East Atlanta Beer Festival

The East Atlanta Beer Festival takes place in Brownwood Park, just a couple streets south of the East Atlanta Village. The closest MARTA station is Inman Park on the blue/green rail line, but you have to take a bus from the station to get to East Atlanta (about a 10 minute ride) as it is not in walking distance.

If you are coming from the red or gold rail lines, transfer at Five Points to the eastbound platform and get on a train labeled “Indian Creek” or “Candler Park” to reach the Inman Park station.  You can also park your car in the free daily lot at the Inman Park station and ride the bus (see map to get directions).  From there, choose from these three bus routes:

You’ll want to check the schedules ahead of time online or use Google Maps or the MARTA app to help plan your trip. Be advised that buses park on both sides of the station, and there is a pedestrian bridge that you can use to get to the other side if necessary. Bus 4 departs from the Inman Park side of the tracks, while 34 and 107 are on the Reynoldstown side.  It is free to ride the bus if you are transferring from the train.

Helpful Tips

  • On the return trip, if you wait at a bus stop on Moreland Avenue north of the East Atlanta Village near the Citgo gas station, you’ll have access to all three bus routes, so you can get on the first bus that arrives.
  • Nearby restaurants include the Graveyard Tavern, The Glenwood, Holy Taco, Grant Central Pizza East, Tomatillos and the Flatiron Restaurant.
  • Make sure to have a roundtrip fare (2 trips) on your Breeze Card to take the bus back to the train station.  Otherwise, you’ll need to pay the exact fare in cash, which is $2.50.

MARTA to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located in Druid Hills, a historic planned community of neighborhoods and parks near Emory University. Bus 2 travels to the museum from the North Avenue and Decatur Station. If coming from North Avenue, be advised that only every other bus travels to the museum.  Look for a bus labeled “Decatur Station” or ask your driver.

Once on the bus, exit at the intersection of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Clifton Road or alert your bus driver of your destination if you aren’t sure where to signal a stop.  Walk north on Clifton Road towards the golf course to reach the driveway to the museum.

Other options for getting to Fernbank include:

  • Take a blue or green line train to the Candler Park Station. Exit on to Dekalb Avenue and walk east, away from downtown.  Turn left on Glendale, right on McClendon then left on Clifton Road (see walking map).  Walking time is about 28 minutes.  This route is also good for biking, if you want to take your bike on MARTA.
  • Take bus 6 from the Lindbergh or Inman Park Station and exit at the intersection of Briarcliff/Moreland Ave. and Ponce de Leon Ave.  From there, walk east (away from the city) to Clifton Road and turn left.  Walking time is about 30 minutes (see walking map).

MARTA to East Atlanta

The closest MARTA station to East Atlanta is Inman Park on the blue/green rail line, but you have to take a bus from the station to get to East Atlanta as it is not in walking distance (see area map).

If you are coming from the red or gold rail lines, transfer at Five Points to the eastbound platform and get on a train labeled “Indian Creek” or “Candler Park” to reach the Inman Park station.  From there, choose from these three bus routes:

You’ll want to check the schedules ahead of time online and print out route schedules to help plan your trip. Be advised that buses park on both sides of the station, and there is a pedestrian bridge that you can use to get to the other side if necessary. Bus 4 departs from the Inman Park side of the tracks, while 34 and 107 are on the Reynoldstown side.

If you are coming from downtown Atlanta, you can also board bus 74 at the Five Points Station, though the ride will be longer.

MARTA to the CDC

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) at the Emory University campus is accessible by a MARTA bus route, though is not in walking distance from a train station (see area map).

Bus 6 departs from the Inman Park and Lindbergh Center MARTA stations. This route goes completely through Emory on Clifton Road and also has a stop at the Emory Village.  Exit at Clifton and Houston Mill Road for the closest access to the CDC.

The free CCTMA Cliff Shuttle is another option.  You can board the shuttle at the Decatur Station bus bay starting at 5:30am and ending at 8pm.  The MARTA bus runs past the CDC until just after 11pm.

If you are coming from the airport, the best route would be to take any northbound train to the Lindbergh Center station and catch bus 6.  Otherwise, you will have to transfer trains at Five Points to get to the other stations.  Another option is to take the train to Lindbergh and from there take a taxi to the CDC.  There are usually taxis available outside the station.

MARTA to Emory University

While Emory University is not near a MARTA station, there are three fairly easy and frequent bus routes that go to the Emory campus.

  • Bus 6, which departs from the Inman Park and Lindbergh Center MARTA station, also goes completely through campus on Clifton and North Decatur Road and has a stop at the Emory Village as well.
  • You can also ride bus 36 from the Midtown or Avondale Stations. This bus travels on North Decatur Road.

In addition to access to the university and Emory Village, the routes also provide easy access to the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts and the Marco C. Carlos Museum.

The Cliff Shuttle is a free service that offers additional free trips to Emory University, with one route connecting to the E6 Decatur station.

MARTA to Little 5 Points

Little 5 Points is a funky commercial district east of downtown Atlanta that has numerous restaurants, bars, boutique shops and nightlife venues.  The closest MARTA station is Inman Park on the blue/green rail line, which is about a 10-15 minute walk away.

If you plan to walk,  the fastest route is to follow the signs pointing to Inman Park after exiting the station’s fare gates, keeping to the right.  At street level, turn right along the bus bay and look for the PATH sidewalk just beyond a fence.  The PATH goes through a park to Euclid Avenue, which is the first street intersection.  Turn right on Euclid and walk about two blocks to reach Little 5 Points.  If walking after dark, turn left at street level, turn right on Hurt Street then right onto Euclid.

If you are going to the Wrecking Bar, Tijuana Garage, Front Page News or  Camelis Pizza, instead of taking the PATH, continue walking straight down Dekalb Avenue (the street the runs under the station) and then turn left on the ramp down to Moreland Avenue.

Bus 6 departs from Inman Park and Lindbergh and will also get you there if you don’t want to walk.  Additionally, the new bus 2 route also travels to Little 5 from the North Avenue Station (on alternating trips) or Candler Park Station, and on weekdays bus 3 from Five Points and Candler Park.
