MARTA to the BeltLine Eastside Trail

The BeltLine is Atlanta’s hopeful light-rail project that operate in a loop around intown Atlanta neighborhoods using existing rail beds.  It will also include trails, the first of which will be the Eastside Trail, scheduled to open in 2012 and run from near the King Memorial MARTA Station to Piedmont Park.

MARTA currently crosses this trail in several places.  Choose from:

  • King Memorial Station – at street level turn right and walk about a block along Dekalb Avenue for the south end of the trail.
  • Five Points and Candler Park Stations – board bus 3 on weekdays to reach the Eastside Trail in the Inman Park neighborhood.  If getting on the bus at Five Points, make sure the destination of the bus is to the Candler Park Station.  Exit the bus around Krog Street and Serpas.  The bus will literally go over the trail.
  • North Avenue, Candler Park and Decatur Stations – board bus 2 to connect with the Eastside Trail at Ponce de Leon Avenue and Ponce City Market.  The bus travels underneath the rail bed and a new pedestrian ramp will be created there. Exit by the huge brick building at the stoplight (across the street is Whole Foods/Home Depot).
  • Midtown StationBus 36 and 99 have stops next to the Eastside Trail, which runs along Park Tavern and Piedmont Park.  Exit around 10th Street and Monroe Drive by the Grady High School stadium.

MARTA to the Midtown Arts Cinema

The Midtown Arts Cinema is a neighborhood movie theater located at 931 Monroe Drive, across from Grady High School and Piedmont Park.  The closest MARTA station is Midtown on the red/gold rail line.  You can take the 10th Street exit out of the station and turn right (if coming up via the Federal reserve tunnel, turn left), and walk about 20 minutes down 10th Street where it dead ends at Monroe Drive.  Turn right on Monroe and left into the Trader Joes shopping center.  In the back is the theater.  Wine are beer are available for purchase.

If you don’t want to walk, you can board bus 36 or bus 99 at the Midtown Station.  Both have stops near the theater (exit by Trader Joes and Starbucks).  The bus ride is no more than five minutes.  Bus 99 also picks up passengers at the Georgia State station and in part of the GSU campus.  If you plan to take the bus back to the station, be advised that bus 36 stops early in the evening.

MARTA to the Atlanta Santa Pub Crawl

For a pub crawl full of costumes, drinks and Toys for Tots donations, check out the yearly Atlanta Santa Pub Crawl (December 10, 2011). Located around the Crescent Avenue bars and clubs in Midtown, the evening begins at Front Page News for wrist bands and toy drop-off.  It is very convenient to MARTA, almost in between two MARTA stations, Midtown and Arts Center on the red/gold rail line.

The Midtown Station is slightly closer.  Take the main exit out of the station and turn right on 10th Street.  At the first stoplight, turn left on Peachtree Street and walk to 11th Street and turn left again.  At Crescent Avenue turn right and walk about a block (see walking map).

Several bus routes feed in to the Midtown Station as well if you live along or near 10th Street by Georgia Tech or Howell Mill (bus 12), Piedmont Avenue, Cheshire Bridge Road (bus 27) , 10th Street by Piedmont Park, Monroe Drive south of the park (bus 99) and Virginia Avenue, N. Highland Avenue north of Virginia Avenue and Emory University along North Decatur Road (bus 36).  Be sure to check bus schedules as some routes, such as 36, end early in the evening.  Or if you are staying in a hotel along Peachtree Street or live nearby, bus 110 runs up and down the street, so just board the bus and exit at 11th Street (look for the large Federal Reserve building).

MARTA to Music Midtown

Music Midtown is returning to Piedmont Park September 24, 2011.  MARTA is the better option for getting to the event due to limited street parking and expected large crowds.

The closest MARTA station to the event is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.  Riders can either take the 10th Street exit out of the station, turn right and walk about 15-20 minutes to the Charles Allen entrance or board bus 36 or 99 at the station.  Check www.itsmarta.com the day of the event for information on any bus rerouting due to possible street closures.

A second entrance will be near the lake.  Festival goers can cut through the park to reach the entrance versus walking straight down 10th (see festival map).  Bus 27 that also departs from the Midtown Station has a drop off at Piedmont and 14th Street, which can be used for this entrance.

MARTA to the Piedmont Park Green Concert

green concert logoOn Oct. 15, 2010 the Eagles will perform in Piedmont Park.  As a green concert, concert goers are asked to take MARTA to the event, especially as parking is limited.  See below for a summary of MARTA directions, or view the complete MARTA options for the Green Concert, including parking tips, on Examiner.com.

There are two stations near Piedmont Park:  Midtown and Arts Center on the north-south (red/gold) rail line.  Both will involve a 15-20 minute walk (see walking directions).  Exiting at the Arts Center will put you closer to the Park Drive rear concert entrance, while exiting at the Midtown station will put you closer to the 10th Street/Charles Allen entrance.

Additionally, there are several bus options from the Midtown station that can reduce your walking time, routes 27, 36 and 99.  As long as you ride the train and tap your Breeze card on the blue circle when exiting the rail station, you can ride the bus for free.

MARTA to the Sweet Auburn Festival

The Sweet Auburn Festival takes place on Auburn Avenue, from Courtland Avenue to the King Center (see area map and festival map).  The two closest MARTA stations to the event are the Georgia State and King Memorial stations. If you are coming from the north or south rail lines, you must exit at Five Points and follow the signs to the Eastbound platform.  All eastbound trains go to both stations.

Expect to walk slightly less than 15 minutes to get to the festival from either station.  Other things to consider:  the walk from the Georgia State station is through the Georgia State University campus, (thus typically safer, though slightly longer)  and the walk from King Memorial is through a newly developed area with apartment buildings.

  • If you exit at Georgia State, take the Piedmont Avenue exit out of the station and turn right onto Piedmont.  Walk about three blocks and you’ll reach the end of the festival near the Calhoun stage.
  • If you exit at the King Memorial station, at street level cross over Decatur Street/Dekalb Avenue and walk north along Hillard Street.

You can also take bus 99 from the Midtown or Georgia State stations or bus 3 from Five Points or Candler Park (weekdays only) to get there as well.

MARTA to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and Historic Site is near downtown Atlanta and offers many free programs and tours along with nearby Ebenezer Baptist Church and the home where King was born.  The nearest MARTA station to the King Center is the King Memorial Station on the blue/green rail line.  You can walk 15-20 minutes to reach the site, though it is still somewhat in a transitional area and best walked during the day time and in a group.  From the station, cross over Decatur Street and walk straight ahead on Hillard Street to Auburn Avenue and turn right (see the walking map).

It is better to take a bus to the historic site.  There are two routes you can choose from:

  • Bus 3 travels to the area on weekdays, departing from Five Points and the Candler Park Station.
  • Bus 99 departs from the Georgia State Station and King Memorial Station weekdays on alternating trips (weekends just Georgia State) and also at North Avenue weekdays non-peak and all other times at Midtown Station. The King Memorial is located closest to the Georgia State and King Memorial stations.

MARTA to Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park is one of Atlanta’s largest and nicest public parks and regularly hosts the Dogwood Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Pride Festival, and Green Concert in addition to Unplugged in the Park (live music at the Park Tavern).   The park also features playgrounds, dog park, a public swimming pool, athletic fields, running track and tennis courts (see area map).

If you are gearing up to take the train, you have two options.  You can exit at the Arts Center Station and take 14th Street into the park, which gets you closer to the sports fields, running track, pavilions and slightly closer to the lake, pool and Saturday morning Green Market.  Walking time is about 15 minutes from this station. Take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station and turn left onto West Peachtree Street.  Walk one block and turn left onto 14th Street and take that all the way to the park, about three blocks.

Or, you can exit at the Midtown Station and take 10th Street down to the park.  This route will put you closer to meadow and  Park Tavern.   It is approximately a 10 minute walk to the edge of the park. Exit the Midtown station onto 10th Street and turn right (if you come up from the Federal Reserve station exit, turn left).

Three buses will also put you next to the park if you don’t want to walk the 10-15 minute distance from or to the train. All buses depart from the N4 Midtown station:

  • Bus 36 goes down 10th Street and onto the Highlands and Emory
  • Bus 99 also goes down 10th Street and then south on Monroe Drive
  • Bus 27 has a stop just outside the 14th Street park entrance and then travels on to the Botanical Garden
