MARTA to L.A. Fitness

There are several MARTA-accessible L.A. Fitness locations around Atlanta.  See below for the list of gyms, with the easiest destinations listed first.

L.A. Fitness Perimeter Point
Take the red rail line (North Springs) to the Sandy Springs Station.  The gym is next to the station in a shopping center at 1155 Mount Vernon Highway.

L.A. Fitness Midtown
Take any red or gold line train to the North Avenue Station or Midtown Station.  Turn right on West Peachtree Street from North Avenue and walk to 5th Street and turn left and walk a block to the gym (75 5th Street).  Or from Midtown, take the Peachtree Place exit out of the station and turn right.  At West Peachtree Street, turn left and walk to 5th Street and turn right.

L.A. Fitness Atlantic Station
Take any red or gold line train to the Arts Center Station and follow the signs to the buses/15th Street exit.  In the bus area is a free shuttle to Atlantic Station.  Exit at the main retail center.  The gym is next to the movie theater.  Bus 37 also departs from the station and travels there.

L.A. Fitness Buckhead
Located at 3232 Peachtree Road NE, it is about a 15 minute walk from the Buckhead Station to the gym.  Take a red line train to the station and after going through the fare gate, take the first set of stairs out of the station or use the elevator just beyond the stairwell.  Turn right at street level and walk about three blocks.  The gym is located below the Marshall’s department store.  From the station exit you can also board bus 110 if you prefer not to walk.

L.A. Fitness Ansley Mall
From the Lindbergh Center or Midtown Station, board bus 27 to get to Ansley Mall.  The trip is shorter from the Midtown Station.  The bus runs in front of the shopping center where the gym is located.  Exit near the stoplight where Publix and Starbucks are located.

MARTA to the Atlanta Santa Pub Crawl

For a pub crawl full of costumes, drinks and Toys for Tots donations, check out the yearly Atlanta Santa Pub Crawl (December 10, 2011). Located around the Crescent Avenue bars and clubs in Midtown, the evening begins at Front Page News for wrist bands and toy drop-off.  It is very convenient to MARTA, almost in between two MARTA stations, Midtown and Arts Center on the red/gold rail line.

The Midtown Station is slightly closer.  Take the main exit out of the station and turn right on 10th Street.  At the first stoplight, turn left on Peachtree Street and walk to 11th Street and turn left again.  At Crescent Avenue turn right and walk about a block (see walking map).

Several bus routes feed in to the Midtown Station as well if you live along or near 10th Street by Georgia Tech or Howell Mill (bus 12), Piedmont Avenue, Cheshire Bridge Road (bus 27) , 10th Street by Piedmont Park, Monroe Drive south of the park (bus 99) and Virginia Avenue, N. Highland Avenue north of Virginia Avenue and Emory University along North Decatur Road (bus 36).  Be sure to check bus schedules as some routes, such as 36, end early in the evening.  Or if you are staying in a hotel along Peachtree Street or live nearby, bus 110 runs up and down the street, so just board the bus and exit at 11th Street (look for the large Federal Reserve building).

MARTA to Music Midtown

Music Midtown is returning to Piedmont Park September 24, 2011.  MARTA is the better option for getting to the event due to limited street parking and expected large crowds.

The closest MARTA station to the event is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.  Riders can either take the 10th Street exit out of the station, turn right and walk about 15-20 minutes to the Charles Allen entrance or board bus 36 or 99 at the station.  Check www.itsmarta.com the day of the event for information on any bus rerouting due to possible street closures.

A second entrance will be near the lake.  Festival goers can cut through the park to reach the entrance versus walking straight down 10th (see festival map).  Bus 27 that also departs from the Midtown Station has a drop off at Piedmont and 14th Street, which can be used for this entrance.

Other Things to Know
Purchase a roundtrip MARTA fare at the start of your trip.  The best place to park and ride MARTA is the Lindbergh Center Station, with free daily parking decks.  Be sure to take your parking ticket with you so you can validate it in the machines with flashing yellow lights on your return trip.

Re-entry will be permitted but you must have your ticket scanned when exiting.  Once your ticket has been scanned out you must use the same ticket to gain re-entry to the festival grounds.  Oversized bags/backpacks, chairs, coolers, bikes, skateboards, outside food, alcohol, pets, aerosol cans, glass and weapons are also not allowed.  One factory sealed or empty water bottle is allowed per person.

MARTA to Taste and Tour of Cheshire Bridge

The Taste and Tour of Cheshire Bridge is a walking food tasting event that will take place July 20-21 2011. The festival includes a free food sample at participating restaurants (including Woodfire Grill), coupons and raffle tickets. Prices are $15.00 per person per day or $25.00 per person for both days. After July 1, the price increases to $20 per day or $35 for both days.  Children are free.

MARTA will be the best option for getting to the festival.  Bus 27 travels the entire length of Cheshire Bridge Road and is the best bus route for the event.  The bus departs from the Lindbergh and Midtown Stations on the red/gold rail line.  Lindbergh has free daily parking decks, which makes it a great park and ride spot.  Once at the festival, a free shuttle will also be available to travel to the different restaurants.

You can also get to Cheshire Bridge Road via bus 6 and bus 30 at the Lindbergh Station. Exit near the Varsity Jr. and CVS, which are at the intersection of Lindbergh Drive and Cheshire Bridge Road.

MARTA to Ansley Park

Built between 1904 and 1930, the Ansley Park Historic District is a neighborhood and not a park,  although there are several greenspaces that provide playgrounds and water features throughout the area.  The neighborhood is known for its large stately homes on winding, tree-lined streets and has a golf course in the north.

The closest MARTA station is the Arts Center Station on the red and gold rail lines.  Take the 15th Street exit out of the station, which is up one level from the fare gates.  Walk down the pedestrian sidewalk through the bus bay and turn left on 15th Street.  Keep walking straight ahead, crossing over Peachtree Street to reach the district.  See area map for navigation.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is on the far side of the neighborhood if you want to combine a neighborhood walking tour with the gardens.

Another option is to board bus 27 from the Midtown Station and exit at along Piedmont Avenue anywhere between 15th Street and Avery Drive.

MARTA to the Piedmont Park Green Concert

green concert logoOn Oct. 15, 2010 the Eagles will perform in Piedmont Park.  As a green concert, concert goers are asked to take MARTA to the event, especially as parking is limited.  See below for a summary of MARTA directions, or view the complete MARTA options for the Green Concert, including parking tips, on Examiner.com.

There are two stations near Piedmont Park:  Midtown and Arts Center on the north-south (red/gold) rail line.  Both will involve a 15-20 minute walk (see walking directions).  Exiting at the Arts Center will put you closer to the Park Drive rear concert entrance, while exiting at the Midtown station will put you closer to the 10th Street/Charles Allen entrance.

Additionally, there are several bus options from the Midtown station that can reduce your walking time, routes 27, 36 and 99.  As long as you ride the train and tap your Breeze card on the blue circle when exiting the rail station, you can ride the bus for free.

MARTA to the 14th Street Playhouse

The 14th Street Playhouse is closest to the N5 Arts Center station.  The easiest route is to take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station and turn left to walk along West Peachtree.  Turn left again at 14th Street and walk about three blocks.  The playhouse will be on the right, across from the W Hotel.

You can also walk up the big hill on 15th Street, turn right onto Peachtree and then left onto 14th.  While it is a slight workout, the benefit is that especially later in the evening, there is more foot traffic.

For more information, see the 10 easiest destinations to get to on MARTA and other arts and culture MARTA directions.

MARTA to the W Hotel

There are four W Hotels in close proximity to MARTA:

  1. W Hotel Downtown
Exit at the Civic Center Station on the red/gold rail line and head south (toward the skyscrapers) on West Peachtree Street.  Turn right at the first stoplight, Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd., and the hotel will be about a block down on the right.
  2. W Hotel Midtown
Exit at the Arts Center Station on the red/gold rail line and take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station.  Turn left to walk alongside West Peachtree Street and turn left again onto 14th Street.  Walk about 3.5 blocks to reach the hotel at 188 14th Street.  You can also get on bus 27 at the Midtown station, which has a stop across from the hotel.
  3. W Hotel Buckhead
Take a red line/North Springs train to the Buckhead Station.  After exiting the fare gates, keep walking straight ahead until the corridor dead ends at a elevator/stairway (bypass the first set of stairs).  Go up to street level and turn right.  The W Hotel is about a block down on the right and also features a swanky rooftop bar called Whiskey Blue.
  4. W Hotel Perimeter
It is a little harder to walk to this hotel due to lack of sidewalks, and if you have luggage, getting a taxi from the Dunwoody Station is advised.  Otherwise, take a North Springs/red line train to the Dunwoody station and after exiting the fare gates, turn right to walk along a corridor that eventually goes down to street level.  Turn right at the bottom of the stairs then a quick left at the first street to walk around Perimeter Mall.  The hotel is at the northern side of the mall campus (see area map).

MARTA to Sweetwater Brewery

Unfortunately, the Sweetwater Brewery is not very MARTA accessible.  The closest train station is N6 Lindbergh, but then you would need to get on bus 27 and exit at Monroe Drive at Monroe Place then walk approximately 17 minutes.  The funny thing is you could also walk there from the station, which takes about 37 minutes and only have an extra 7 minutes added to your commute as compared to taking the bus (see direction map).

The next best option is to take a cab from the Lindbergh Center MARTA station, which shouldn’t cost too much.  Plus, there are usually cabs waiting outside the station on a regular basis.

For more information, see bars near MARTA and how to use Google Maps for MARTA directions.

MARTA to the Atlanta Jazz Festival

The Atlanta Jazz Festival takes place on Memorial Day weekend every year in Piedmont Park.

You can exit at the Arts Center Station on the red/gold rail line and follow the signs to the West Peachtree Street exit and turn left to walk along West Peachtree.   At 14th Street turn left and walk about three blocks to reach the park.

Or, you can exit at the Midtown Station, also on the red/gold rail line, and walk east on 10th Street (toward Peachtree Street).  This exit will be better for getting to the meadow off of 10th Street.

Three bus routes will also be available at the Midtown station for those who don’t want to walk the approximate 15 minutes to the festival.

  • Bus 36 travels down 10th Street
  • Bus 99 travels down 10th Street
  • Bus 27 travels up Piedmont and stops at the 14th Street entrance to the park

MARTA to the Atlanta Botanical Garden

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is located near the Woodruff Arts Center and Piedmont Park, closest to the Arts Center Station on the red/gold rail line.  In addition to the gardens themselves, there are regular events, including Cocktails in the Garden, art installations and Sun Trust Concerts in the Botanical Gardens.

If you exit at the Arts Center Station, the only option is to walk 20 minutes to the gardens through Ansley Park.  Follow the signs to the 15th Street exit (which is up one level) and turn left on 15th Street after walking through the bus bay.  Walk up the hill, cross over Peachtree Street and keep walking through the neighborhood until Piedmont Avenue.  Turn left onto Piedmont and walk up to the next stoplight, which will be the entrance to the garden (see map).  It is about a 20 minute walk.

If you rather not walk, take a red or gold line train to the Midtown Station and get on bus 27.  Tell the driver your destination, or exit at Piedmont Avenue and The Prado (first stoplight after the bus turns on Piedmont Avenue). You can also board the bus at Lindbergh Center, but the bus ride will be longer.

MARTA to Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park is one of Atlanta’s largest and nicest public parks and regularly hosts the Dogwood Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Pride Festival, and Green Concert in addition to Unplugged in the Park (live music at the Park Tavern).   The park also features playgrounds, dog park, a public swimming pool, athletic fields, running track and tennis courts (see area map).

If you are gearing up to take the train, you have two options.  You can exit at the Arts Center Station and take 14th Street into the park, which gets you closer to the sports fields, running track, pavilions and slightly closer to the lake, pool and Saturday morning Green Market.  Walking time is about 15 minutes from this station. Take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station and turn left onto West Peachtree Street.  Walk one block and turn left onto 14th Street and take that all the way to the park, about three blocks.

Or, you can exit at the Midtown Station and take 10th Street down to the park.  This route will put you closer to meadow and  Park Tavern.   It is approximately a 10 minute walk to the edge of the park. Exit the Midtown station onto 10th Street and turn right (if you come up from the Federal Reserve station exit, turn left).

Three buses will also put you next to the park if you don’t want to walk the 10-15 minute distance from or to the train. All buses depart from the N4 Midtown station:

  • Bus 36 goes down 10th Street and onto the Highlands and Emory
  • Bus 99 also goes down 10th Street and then south on Monroe Drive
  • Bus 27 has a stop just outside the 14th Street park entrance and then travels on to the Botanical Garden
