MARTA to Grant Park

Grant Park sits in a historic district of turn-of-the-century homes and contains a large public pool, wooded paths, playgrounds, tennis courts, Zoo Atlanta and more. The park is also home to the Summer Shade Festival that takes place every August.

The closest station to Grant Park is E2 King Memorial, but it is a 30 minute walk to the park (see walking directions here). Otherwise, you can choose a bus route:

Bus 97 from the N2 Civic Center and Five Points station. This route will also get you to the Georgia Aquarium, but the drawback is that it is a long ride

Bus 397 from the E2 King Memorial or E3 Inman Park station. **This route will no longer be in service as of Sept. 25, 2010.
Bus 32 from the E2 King Memorial station, which runs on the Boulevard side of the park closest to the pool

MARTA to Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain is a popular tourist attraction with a literal stone mountain that can be climbed, rock carvings, lake, hiking trails and more. Special events are also held here throughout the year.

It is not near a MARTA train station, but you can get on bus 120 at the E7 Avondale station on the east-west rail line. If you are coming from the airport, downtown, midtown or otherwise in the north, you’ll have to transfer at the Five Points station to the Eastbound train platform and get on a train marked “Indian Creek”.

The bus ride is about 35 minutes. Exit at 4th Street and E. Mountain Street. From there it is about a 10 minute walk to the park entrance.

MARTA to Candler Park (the park)

Candler Park is both a neighborhood and a park off the E4 Candler Park MARTA station on the east/west rail line (see map). The park is about one mile from the station and has a large green space, swimming pool, basketball courts and more.

If you are coming from the north or south, be sure to transfer at Five Points to the Eastbound platform. All eastbound trains go to Candler Park, so get on the first train that arrives.

After exiting the fare gate, follow the exit marked Candler Park. Head west (toward downtown) on Dekalb Avenue then turn right onto Oakdale Road. Take Oakdale to McLendon Avenue and turn right. The park will be about a block down.

MARTA to Six Flags

There is a MARTA shuttle that goes to the Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park. It departs from the W5 H.E. Holmes station at the end of the west line. If you are coming from the north or south, you must exit at Five Points and follow the signs to the Westbound platform and get on a train marked “H.E. Holmes”.

Once at the station, you’ll want to get on bus 201, which is the shuttle to Six Flags. Make sure to tap your Breeze card when exiting the station to get a free transfer. If you didn’t take the train or bus to the station, you must pay $2.

The shuttle operates every 40 minutes while Six Flags is open. It begins running one hour before the park opens and one hour after it closes. For more specific departure times, you must call MARTA customer service at (404) 848-5000.

MARTA to Screen on the Green

Screen on the Green returns to Piedmont Park for the 2010 season. The movies take place in the meadow next to Park Tavern (see area map). For easiest access, exit at the N4 Midtown station and take the 10th Street exit out of the station. Turn right, east, onto 10th Street and walk about four blocks. (If you accidentally exit via the Federal Reserve building, just be sure to turn left onto 10th Street.)

Bus 45 departs from the Midtown station and travels along 10th Street if you don’t want to walk. If you tap your breeze card when exiting the train station you can ride the bus for free. Look up the bus schedule ahead of time to plan or use Google Maps for MARTA schedules via a smartphone.

The series begins with “National Treasure” on May 27, and is followed by “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” on June 3, “Dreamgirls” on June 10 and “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope” on June 17. The last movie on June 24 will be voted on.
