MARTA to the Old Fourth Ward Park Arts Festival

The Old Fourth Ward Park Arts Festival takes place in June as a celebration of arts in the newly developing Old Fourth Ward Park area.  Next to the BeltLine Eastside trail and Ponce City Market, the festival includes an artist market, children’s area, live music and food vendors.  The closest MARTA station is the North Avenue MARTA station on the red/gold line.  From there, board bus 2  and exit at Ponce de Leon and Glen Iris Drive, which is next to Cactus Carwash and Ponce City Market.  The park is one block south, behind Ponce City Market.  You can also connect with bus 2 at the Candler Park and Decatur stations.

The other bus route that travels to the park is bus 16, which departs from the Five Points station and from Loehman’s Plaza.  See walking directions to the park from both bus stops.

From the BeltLine, exit the trail just south of the North Avenue bridge at Angier Springs Road/Somerset Terrace and turn left on North Avenue.  Connect with the trail in Inman Park (Irwin Street or Elizabeth and N. Highland) or from the Highlands/Piedmont Park/Virginia Avenue.

MARTA to Whole World Improv Theatre

The Whole World Improv Theatre is located at 1216 Spring Street NW, closest to the Arts Center MARTA station on the red/gold rail line.  The venue offers improv comedy shows and classes.

Take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station and cross the street.  Walk through the parking lot directly across the station via the 15th Street crosswalk to reach Spring Street and turn left.  If you’d rather not walk through a parking lot, turn left on West Peachtree Street, right on 14th Street and right on Spring Street.  Approximate walking time through the parking lot is about 5 minutes.

Helpful Tips

  • Nearby places to eat include DaVinci’s Pizzeria, Veni Vidi Vici, Einstein’s Bagels and Carolyn’s Gourmet Cafe.  See restaurant listings here.
  • If you are returning to the Buckhead, Medical Center, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs or North Springs stations after 7 p.m., board the first northbound train that arrives at the Arts Center station and go one stop to the Lindbergh Center station and wait for a North Springs train there.

MARTA to the Trolley Barn

Designed in 1880, the Trolley Barn is just that — a historic building at 963 Edgewood Avenue NE that once housed Atlanta’s streetcars.  Today it is used as a special event space and in addition to the main hall, there is a serving kitchen, an 800 square-foot mezzanine overlooking the hall, a 2,400 square-foot general purpose room underneath the main hall and a large outdoor brick patio.  It is also home to the yearly Butterfly Ball that takes place during the Inman Park Festival.

The closest MARTA station is Inman Park on the blue/green rail line, which is literally just down the street.  If coming from Five Points (and the red/gold line), board an Eastbound train marked Indian Creek or Candler Park at Five Points.  Once at the Inman Park station, follow the signs pointing to Inman Park after exiting the fare gate and at street level, keep walking straight ahead from the stairway/escalators along the bus bay to enter Edgewood Avenue.  The Trolley Barn is about a block down on the left.

MARTA to the Starlight Six Drive-In Theatre

The Starlight Six Drive-In Theatre is located at 2000 Moreland Avenue SE, closest to the Inman Park MARTA station on the blue/green rail line.  This classic drive-in is cash-only and has multiple screens and a snack bar.

On MARTA, take a blue or green line train to the Inman Park station (if coming from Five Points, board a train marked “Indian Creek” or “Candler Park”.  At the station, follow the signs pointing to Inman Park after exiting the fare gate, keeping to the right.  At street level wait for and board bus 4, which has a stop near the theatre.  Signal for the bus stop once you see the signs for the theatre, after the bus crosses McDonough Blvd.  There is a bus stop at that intersection, but it is only close to one screen in the north end of the grounds. The next bus stop is more central and is across from the Crestnut Hill Cemetery.  (See this stop on the map below at Isa Drive).  You can also tell your driver your destination.  For the return trip, return to the same bus stop.  The bus route will do a loop and circle back to the MARTA station.

On the weekend, be back at the bus stop no later than 11:55 p.m. to catch the last bus and 11:40 p.m. on weekdays.

MARTA to Rhodes Hall

Built in 1904, Rhodes Hall at 1516 Peachtree St NW is a historic mansion that contains a museum and special event space, with tours available on Tuesdays and Saturdays (group tours available on other days by appointment).  The closest MARTA station is the Arts Center station on the red/gold rail line, just over a 10 minute walk, or bus 110 that departs from the Arts Center (along with the Lenox and Buckhead stations) and has a stop out front.

If walking, take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the Arts Center station and turn right on West Peachtree Street.  Rhodes Hall is just over two blocks up on the left.

MARTA to the Goat Farm Arts Center

The Goat Farm Arts Center is a visual and performing arts center located at 1200 Foster Street NW. In addition to the historic 20,00 square foot facility that includes a library, cafe and five exhibition halls, there is also an organic farm on site.

The closest MARTA station is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.  Board bus 12 at the station and exit the bus at the intersection of Howell Mill Road with Huff Road.  Commute time is approximately 15 minutes.  You can also connect with the bus at most points along Howell Mill Road or at the Cumberland Transfer Center next to Cumberland Mall.

MARTA to United Artists Tara Cinema

The United Artists Tara Cinema is located at 2345 Cheshire Bridge Road at the intersection with Lindbergh Drive, in Cheshire Square.  The closest MARTA station is the Lindbergh Center Station on the red/gold rail line.  The theater often features documentaries and artistic/indie films in addition to current blockbusters.

To get there on MARTA, board bus 6, bus 27 or bus 30 at Lindbergh Center. The ride is about six minutes and only six stops away from the station.  You can also connect with bus 6 at the Inman Park Station and bus 27 at the Midtown Station if you are coming from that part of town.

MARTA to the College Football Hall of Fame

Due to open in the fall of 2014, the new College Football Hall of Fame is a short walk from the Dome MARTA Station on the blue/green rail line.  If coming from the airport or from downtown, midtown, Buckhead or further north, take the first available train to the Five Points station, exit the train and follow the signs to the Westbound train platform.  From there, board the first Westbound train (labeled H.E. Holmes or Bankhead) and ride one stop to the Dome station.

Take the Philips Arena exit out of the station and go up the tall escalators.  At street level, turn left and walk around Philips Arena, turning right at the first street.  Follow the road around to Marietta Street and turn left.  The Hall of Fame is on the left, less than a block away.  Total walking time is about 10 minutes.

MARTA to the Atlanta Chinese Cultural Center

The Atlanta Chinese Cultural Center is located at 5377 New Peachtree Road in Chamblee, a short walk from the Chamblee MARTA Station on the gold rail line.  The facility includes an auditorium, conference room, classrooms and art exhibits.

On MARTA, take a gold line (marked Doraville if coming from the airport, downtown or midtown) to the Chamblee Station.  Take the New Peachtree Road exit out of the station and turn left on New Peachtree.  The center is less than a 10 minute walk away, and will be on the right side of the street.

MARTA to the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot

The Georgia Railroad Freight Depot is located at 65 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, next to Underground Atlanta.  Built in 1869 not long after the Civil War, it was the tallest building in Georgia at the time, and after a fire in 1935 several floors were removed.  Today it is used as an event facility.

The building is in between the Five Points and Georgia State stations.    From Five Points, follow the signs pointing Braves Shuttle/To Street.  Take the Peachtree Street exit out of the station and either walk out the station straight ahead at the light to Upper Alabama Street, or before exiting the station, turn right through the doors marked Underground Atlanta and walk through the corridor on Lower Alabama Street.  Both streets end at the freight depot, about a block down.  Using Underground Atlanta is a better option after dark and in bad weather.

From the Georgia State station, take the Piedmont Avenue exit out of the station and turn left on Piedmont.  Walk one block to Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. and turn right.  The depot is about a half block down on the right in the rear of the Steve Polk Plaza.

MARTA to the Horizon Theatre

The Horizon Theatre is located at 1083 Austin Avenue NE in the Inman Park neighborhood, near the Inman Park MARTA Station.  The theatre is located in the back of the Little Five Points Community Center, formerly a school, and features theatrical performances and plays.  The most direct walk from the MARTA station is to follow the signs pointing to Inman Park after exiting the fare gates, and at street level turn right to walk along the front of the station to reach a sidewalk marked “The Path”, just on the other side of a fence.  Take the PATH through the park and at the first street intersection (Euclid Avenue), turn right.  Euclid merges with Austin Avenue, and the theater is about two blocks down on the right.

If you are traveling from Virginia Highlands, Emory or the La Vista/Briarcliff Area, you can board a southbound bus 6 on Briarcliff or Clifton Road, and exit the bus at the intersection of Moreland Avenue and Euclid Avenue.  A stoplight is at that intersection, along with Zesto and a gas station.

There are plenty of restaurants near the theatre if you need to eat before or after the show.

MARTA to the Sandy Springs Festival

The Sandy Springs Festival has been ongoing for over 20 years, and attendees can enjoy an artist market, live music, petting zoo, pet parade, 5k/10k and more.  It takes place at Heritage Green, 6075 Sandy Springs Circle, Sandy Springs, GA, closest to the Dunwoody MARTA Station on the red rail line.

To get to the Dunwoody Station, riders need to be on a North Springs train if coming from downtown, midtown or Buckhead.  Remember if you are traveling after 7pm, you can only board the North Springs train at the Lindbergh Center Station.

If you are coming from the gold rail line from stations such as Doraville, Chamblee, Brookhaven or Lenox, you must take a southbound train to the Lindbergh Center Station and transfer to a northbound, North Springs train there.

Once at the Dunwoody Station, follow the signs to the buses and board bus 5 or bus 87.  Exit the bus at Hilderbrand Drive and Roswell Road where there is a stoplight.  Walk one block west (head toward the side of the street with the Fast Signs business) on Hilderbrand then turn left on Bluestone Road to reach the park.

MARTA to the Little 5 Fest

The Little 5 Fest features over 80 live performing acts spread out at over 10 stages at venues in Little Five Points.  The 2012 date is Saturday, Sept. 29, and tickets start at $10.

The nearest MARTA station is Inman Park on the blue/green rail line.  If you are coming from the north/south rail line, you will need to exit the train at the Five Points Station then follow the signs to the Eastbound platform and board a train marked “Candler Park” or “Indian Creek”.  Once at Inman Park,  keep right after exiting the fare gate to exit on the Inman Park side of the station.  At street level turn right along the parking lot to reach a sidewalk marked “The PATH”, which is just beyond a fence.  The sidewalk will take you through a residential park, past a playground and to Euclid Avenue, which is the first street you’ll reach.  Turn right and walk about 10 minutes to reach Little 5 Points.

Bus 6 also travels to Little 5 Points from the Inman Park Station and from Emory University for those students who wish to attend.  Bus 2 goes to Little 5 Points on alternating trips from the Candler Park and North Avenue stations as well.  Exit either bus at the intersection of Moreland and Euclid Avenue ( Zesto’s is on the corner).

  • Bus 2 travels down Ponce as well, so if you are commuting from Poncey Highland or Virginia Highland, it is a good route to take.  Just check schedules ahead of time and be sure to get on the bus with the Candler Park Station as the end destination.
  • If bus 6 is at Inman Park when you arrive from the train, you can transfer for free.  Just tap your Breeze Card.
  • There are plenty of places to eat in the area.  Vortex is known for burgers, The Porter a beer-lovers gastropub or try some food-truck style food at O.M.G. Taco.

MARTA to the Peachtree Latino Festival

The Peachtree Latino Festival takes place every August, typically in Piedmont Park.  The event features live Latin music, dancing, art and vendor booths and a children’s play area.

The closest MARTA station to the festival is the Midtown Station on the red and gold rail lines.   After exiting the station, turn right on 10th Street and walk about four blocks or 15  minutes.  You can also board bus 36 or bus 99 at the Midtown Station to get a ride to the park.  Both buses travel down 10th Street.  Bus 36 departs from the Avondale Station as well, or you can also board bus 99 at the North Avenue or Georgia State Stations, you will just have a longer commute.

MARTA to the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival

The Atlanta Black Theatre Festival takes place October 4-7, 2012, near the Midtown and Arts Center MARTA stations on the red/gold rail line.   You can see 40 plays in four days at the Lowes Hotel and the 14th Street Playhouse.  Some events are free while others require purchasing a ticket.  Choose from solo and group performances, skits/improv, youth shows and after parties.

MARTA to the Shakespeare Tavern

The Shakespeare Tavern is located at 499 Peachtree Street NE, near the North Avenue MARTA Station on the red/gold rail line.  If you’ve ever wanted to see a live performance of Shakespeare’s works, this is the place.

From the North Avenue Station, follow the signs to the North Avenue/West Peachtree Street exit.  Turn left on North Avenue, walk up the street, then turn right on Peachtree Street.  The tavern is about two blocks away.  Nearby restaurants include Legends Restaurant and Lounge and Gladys and Ron’s’ Chicken and Waffles.

  • You can also exit at the Civic Center Station, go north on West Peachtree Street, right on Pine and left on Peachtree, however, it involves going by a homeless shelter.
  • Use caution after dark and stick to the main streets.
  • Bus 110 has a stop outside the tavern if you are coming from a hotel or other destination on Peachtree Street.  The bus also stops at the Five Points, Arts Center, Buckhead and Lenox stations.

MARTA to Poncey Highland

Shops in Poncey HighlandPoncey Highland is hip neighborhood a few miles east of midtown Atlanta.  It includes restaurants and venues along Ponce de Leon Avenue and south of Ponce de Leon Avenue on N. Highland Avenue.  Attractions include the Highland Inn Ballroom, Plaza Theater, Manuel’s Tavern, Blondie at the Clermont Lounge and King of Pops at N. Highland and North Avenue.

The North Avenue Station is the closest to the area, but far to walk.  Instead, board bus 2 at the North Avenue, Candler Park or Decatur Station.  Bus 2 travels down Ponce de Leon, providing easy access to the entire area.  Alternating bus 2 routes also travel down N. Highland Avenue into Poncey Highlands.

You can also board bus 16 at the Five Points Station to reach the neighborhood and restaurants along N. Highland Avenue.  After the bus passes the Carter Center and turns left on N. Highland Avenue, it will enter the neighborhood.

Helpful Tips

  • You can take one bus there and another bus route back if it works better with timing and your destination.
  • The Virginia Highland neighborhood is just up N. Highland Avenue from Ponce de Leon for more restaurants and nightlife options.
  • The Real Chow Baby has karaoke at night, or see Blondie crush beer cans at the Clermont.  The Highland Inn Ballroom and MJQ regularly have music shows.

MARTA to the East Point Carnival

The East Point Carnival takes place two times a year in July and in September/October on Main Street, near the East Point MARTA Station (see area map).    The event features rides, games and food and is a short walk from the station.  After exiting the station, merely turn right on Main Street and walk a couple blocks.

Helpful Tips

  • Both the red and gold trains stop at this station.
  • There are several restaurants across the station, including the Corner Tavern, Thumbs Up Diner and Oz Pizza.
  • Up to two children under 46″ ride MARTA for free with a paying adult.

MARTA to the Festival on Ponce

The new Festival on Ponce features local artists and acoustic music in a series of parks created by Fredrick Olmsted, Sr. .along Ponce de Leon Avenue.  The event is held in the spring and fall and also includes a children’s area and food trucks.  This event is organized by the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces and volunteer artists to benefit the local community including the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance and the Paideia School.

For easiest access, riders can board bus 2 at the North Avenue, Candler Park or Decatur Stations, which travels along Ponce de Leon Avenue and the festival. Another option is to take bus 6 from the Inman Park or Lindbergh Station and exit at Moreland and Ponce de Leon and walking about 10 minutes away from downtown on Ponce.

MARTA to the Steamhouse Oysterfest

The Steamhouse Oysterfest is a yearly outdoor block party around the Steamhouse Lounge at 1051 West Peachtree St NW.  The event features two days of live music and oyster buckets. The closest MARTA station is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.   It is a relatively short walk.  From the main station exit, turn left on 10th Street then right at the first stoplight on West Peachtree Street.  The restaurant is one block up the street.

If you need to park and ride MARTA, a good option is the Lindbergh Center Station, just two stops away.  There are several parking garages for daily parking.  Be sure to take your parking ticket with you so you can validate it in the Lindbergh station on your way back to your car.

MARTA to Center Stage/The Loft/Vinyl

Center Stage, The Loft and Vinyl are live music venues in Midtown, located in the same building at 1374 West Peachtree Street.  They are a short walk away from the Arts Center Station on the red/gold rail line.  Take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station and turn right on West Peachtree and walk about a block to 17th Street.  The building is on the corner.   Bus 37 departs from the station and also has a stop there, although walking time is only about five minutes.

MARTA to the Blue Grassroots Music and Arts Festival

The Stone Mountain Village Blue Grassroots Music and Art Festival is a yearly event in March at the Stone Mountain Village.  The village will have street music jams and contra dancing in addition to Bluegrass musicians on stage, an arts and crafts show and a children’s area.  Admission is free.  The event hosted by the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces and Main Street Stone Mountain.

To get there on MARTA, take  bus 121 from the Kensington MARTA Station on the blue rail line. If you are coming from the red/gold rail line, such as from downtown or midtown, you’ll have to transfer at the Five Points Station to the Eastbound train platform and get on a train marked “Indian Creek”.

The bus ride is about 35 minutes — the Stone Mountain Village is at the end of the route.  On Saturdays, bus 121 runs every 20 minutes and departs the Kensington Station at 15, 35 and 55 minutes past the hour. View the full Saturday schedule for bus 121 here.

MARTA to the Atlanta Winter Beer Fest

The Atlanta Winter Beer Fest takes place in January at the Masquerade, a music venue at 695 North Avenue.  Plenty of beer and several stages of live music to go around. Tickets are cheaper if you purchase in advance.

To get there on MARTA, board bus 2 at either the North Avenue, Candler Park or Decatur Station (yes Decatur fans, if you live near the Decatur Square or off Ponce, just hop on the bus — same with those who live in Poncey or Virgina Highland).  Exit at the intersection of Ponce de Leon and Glen Iris Drive.  Cactus Car Wash, Eats and City Hall East will be on the corner.  Walk south on Glen Iris then turn left on North Avenue and walk about a block (see walking map).  On Saturdays, the bus departs about every hour from Decatur and Candler park and every 35 minutes from North Avenue.  Be sure to check the schedule.

MARTA to the Midtown Arts Cinema

The Midtown Arts Cinema is a neighborhood movie theater located at 931 Monroe Drive, across from Grady High School and Piedmont Park.  The closest MARTA station is Midtown on the red/gold rail line.  You can take the 10th Street exit out of the station and turn right (if coming up via the Federal reserve tunnel, turn left), and walk about 20 minutes down 10th Street where it dead ends at Monroe Drive.  Turn right on Monroe and left into the Trader Joes shopping center.  In the back is the theater.  Wine are beer are available for purchase.

If you don’t want to walk, you can board bus 36 or bus 99 at the Midtown Station.  Both have stops near the theater (exit by Trader Joes and Starbucks).  The bus ride is no more than five minutes.  Bus 99 also picks up passengers at the Georgia State station and in part of the GSU campus.  If you plan to take the bus back to the station, be advised that bus 36 stops early in the evening.

Nearby restaurants/bars include Metro Fresh, F.R.O.G.S. Cantina, Mellow Mushroom, Jersey Mike’s Subs, The Highlander, Apres Diem, Rice Box, Desi Spice and Royal Orchid Thai.

MARTA to the Chick-fil-A Bowl Parade

The 2011 Chick-fil-A Bowl Parade takes place Dec. 31 from 12:30 – 2 p.m. just outside the Peachtree Center MARTA station on the red/gold rail line.  All north/soundbound trains stop at this station, and all station exits will take you to street level where you can view the start of the parade. Or if coming from the blue or green rail line, exit at the Five Points Station and follow the signs to the Northbound train platform and get on the first train that arrives and go one stop to Peachtree Center.

The other option is to exit at the Dome Station on the blue/green rail line and follow the signs to the Philips Arena exit.  Go up the escalators and keep walking straight ahead along Centennial Olympic Park Drive (Philips Arena will be on your left).  A few blocks up the parade route travels on Andrew Young International Blvd. through the park (see walking map).  If you are coming from the north or south rail line, be sure to exit at Five Points and follow the signs to the Westbound platform for the correct train.

The Chick-fil-A Bowl Fanfest will take place next to the Dome Station at the Georgia World Congress Center after the parade and the football game will take place in the Georgia Dome next door.

Top 5 MARTA Stations to Park and Ride

MARTA to the Krog Tunnel

The Krog Tunnel is one of Atlanta’s more off-the-beaten-track attractions.  It is known for its graffiti that is equally artwork and advertisement space for local area events.  The tunnel is located where Old Fourth Ward, Inman Park and Cabbagetown meet.  There is no bus route that travels into the tunnel (not enough height), but you can get within a two block walk.

Take bus 3 from either the Five Points or Candler Park Station and exit at Krog Street and Irwin Street.  Look for the lofty brick buildings and railroad tracks.  Walk south on Krog Street toward Stove Works and the tunnel will soon be visible (see area map).  Nearby destinations include the BeltLine, Studioplex, Serpas tapas, Kevin Rathbun’s Krog Bar and 97 Estoria pub. **Note, bus 3 only travels to the area on weekdays only.  Another option is bus 21, but that does require a much longer walk. Exit at Pearl Street and Memorial Drive.

MARTA to the Children’s Christmas Parade

The Children’s Christmas Parade takes place every year in downtown Atlanta along Peachtree Street.  For 2011, view the parade at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3  just outside the Peachtree Center MARTA Station near the intersection of Baker and Peachtree Street.  Attendees can take any exit out of the station to see the parade or exit at the Five Points Station and turn left out of the Peachtree Street station exit to view the parade near the middle of the route.

MARTA to the Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes

The Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes is an annual event during the winter holiday season and provides an inside look at the homes in the neighborhood.  The 2011 dates are Dec. 10 and 11 and tickets are $25 in advance, which includes food tastings from local restaurants.  Ticket pick-up and sales will be at the YWCA at 957 N. Highland Avenue.  To get there on MARTA, choose from two bus routes:

  • Bus 16 stops in front of the YWCA and goes through the entire neighborhood on N. Highland Avenue.  You can get on the bus at the Five Points Station or along N. Highland Avenue from Freedom Parkway north to Johnson Road.  The route ends at Loehman’s Plaza off Briarcliff and North Druid Hills Road.
  • Bus 36 departs from the Midtown and Avondale Stations and stops at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and N. Highland Avenue.  Exit the bus and walk south (towards Yeah Burger) about one block.

MARTA to the Chastain Park Arts Festival

An annual festival in November, the Chastain Park Arts Festival features over 200 artists, live acoustic music, local food, food trucks and a children’s area.  The festival benefits “Livable Buckhead”, which develops  and maintains  greenspace, as well as a scholarship fund for local artists administered by the Georgia Foundation for Public Spaces. The 2011 dates are Nov. 5-6.

Chastain Park is accessible via bus 5, which departs the Lindbergh and Dunwoody Stations. Exit the bus at Roswell Road and W. Wieuca Road and walk a mile to reach the festival (see walking map).

MARTA to the Ferst Center for the Arts

The Ferst Center for the Arts is located on the Georgia Tech campus at 350 Ferst Dr NW.  There are two options for getting there on MARTA:

Take a red or gold line train to the North Avenue Station and board bus 26.  Exit the bus at the intersection of North Avenue and Cherry Street.  A Hampton Inn will at the intersection on the left side of the street.  Walk north on Cherry Street, then left on Ferst Drive.  Follow the road around to the Student Center, which has a pyramid-shaped sculpture sticking out at the entrance to its parking lot.  Turn right into the parking lot and walking straight ahead to reach the Ferst Center.  The Student Center will be on your right, and just behind it is the Ferst Center. Walking time is 10-15 minutes (see walking map).

The other option, which involves less walking, is to board the free Tech Trolley at the Midtown Station at the Peachtree Place station exit. Tell the driver you want to exit at the Student Center, which is one stop before the transit hub at the end of the line (see trolley route map). Follow the same directions above by walking through the student center parking lot to reach the Ferst Center.

MARTA to Taste of Atlanta

Taste of Atlanta is a annual event showcasing chefs and restaurants around the city.  Tickets start at $25 in advance and include a number of free samples, live cooking demonstrations, family area and more. The 2012 dates are Oct. 5-7, and the event will take place at Tech Square in Midtown.

Tech Square is about equally distant between the North Avenue and Midtown Stations on the red/gold rail lines. For the shortest walk, take the Fox Theatre exit out of the North Avenue station.  After exiting the fare gates, walk straight ahead through the shopping mall and exit on 3rd Street.  Turn left on 3rd then right on West Peachtree.  Tech Square is less than two blocks up on the left at 5th Street.

When exiting at the Midtown station, take the Peachtree Place exit out of the station and turn right.  At the first intersection, turn left on West Peachtree Street and walk down to 5th Street.

  • For an easy MARTA adventure, park at the Lindbergh Center Station and take any southbound train to the Midtown or North Avenue Station.
  • Cypress Street Pint and Plate is a cool place to hang before or after the event, or catch some football at Taco Mac or Hudson Grille by the Midtown Station.
  • Trains run every 20 minutes on the weekend.  Look up schedules in advance or use Google Transit on your smartphone to know the next arrival time.

MARTA to the Sweet Auburn Heritage Festival

The Sweet Auburn Heritage Festival takes place each fall on historic Auburn Avenue near downtown Atlanta.  The festival highlights the history of the historic street and offers food, artist market, live entertainment and a kids zone.

The closest MARTA stations are the Georgia State and King Memorial Stations on the blue/green rail line.

  • If you exit at Georgia State, take the Jesse Hill Jr. exit of the station and turn left.  Auburn Avenue is about four blocks up the street past Grady Hospital.
  • If you exit at the King Memorial Station, at street level cross over Decatur Street/Dekalb Avenue and walk north along Hillard Street.

You can also take bus 99 from the Georgia State or King Memorial station.

MARTA to the Wheelbarrow Festival

The Wheelbarrow Festival is hosted yearly by the Reynoldstown neighborhood.  Located just south of Little Five Points in the Lang-Carson Park, the festival is family-friendly and features live music, food and art.

The closest MARTA station is the Inman Park Station on the blue/green rail line.  If coming from Five Points, board an Eastbound train labeled “Indian Creek” or “Candler Park” to get to there.

From the station, the park is about a 15 minute walk south.  After exiting the fare gates, turn left to take the exit marked “Reynoldstown”.  At street level take Seaboard Avenue along the rail tracks toward downtown and turn left on Walthall Street then right on Boulevard Drive.  Keeping walking to Manigault Street and turn right (see walking map).  You can also bring your bike on the train and bike from the station.

MARTA to the East Atlanta Strut

The East Atlanta Strut is a yearly music and arts festival that takes place in mid-September.  In addition to live music and art, the festival features a parade, 5K and motorcycle and car show.

The closest MARTA station to the festival/East Atlanta is Inman Park on the blue/green rail line, although you must take a bus from the station to get the neighborhood.

If you are coming from the red or gold rail lines, transfer at Five Points to the eastbound platform and get on a train labeled “Indian Creek” or “Candler Park” to reach the Inman Park station.  From there, choose from these three bus routes:

You’ll want to check the schedules ahead of time online and print out route schedules or view on your smartphone to help plan your trip. Buses park on both sides of the station — bus 4 departs from the Inman Park side of the tracks, while 34 and 107 are on the Reynoldstown side.

MARTA to the Decatur Book Festival

The AJC Decatur Book Festival takes place every year over Labor Day weekend in Downtown Decatur.  It is an easy ride on MARTA, as the Decatur Station sits right below the square where the majority of festivities are held.

To get to the Decatur MARTA Station you must be on a blue line train.  From Five Points, follow the signs to the Eastbound platform and board an Indian Creek train.

If you live in Midtown, you could also take bus 2 from Ponce de Leon to Decatur. Be advised that only every other bus travels all the way to Decatur.

For parking and riding, the MARTA stations to each side of Decatur have free daily parking, East Lake and Avondale.  Or use end of the line stations like Kensington and Indian Creek  if coming from I-285.

MARTA to the Buckhead Music Festival

For some summer music, head to the Buckhead Theatre for the Buckhead Music Festival on Saturday, July 30, 2011.  The event features live, outdoor music, beer and food trucks.

The closest MARTA station is Buckhead on the north red rail line, but it is about a 25 minute walk (see MARTA to the Buckhead Theatre for walking directions).  However, you can also board bus 110 outside the first stairwell exit at the Buckhead Station, from the Lenox Station or from the Arts Center Station (be sure to board a northbound, Lenox Station bus). Exit at the intersection of Peachtree and Roswell Roads.

Navigating the Buckhead Station

MARTA to the Atlanta Arts Festival

The Atlanta Arts Festival takes place in Piedmont Park on the second weekend after Labor Day. The festival features an artist market, live music and food around the active oval near 14th Street and Piedmont Avenue.  The nearest MARTA stations are Arts Center and Midtown on the red/gold rail line.

To get there on MARTA, you choose between either station, though you will the option to ride three buses to the park at the Midtown location.  The Arts Center Station will put you a little closer to the festival market if you are walking.  From the Arts Center Station, take the West Peachtree Street exit out of the station and turn left on West Peachtree Street.  Walk one block and turn left on 14th Street and take that all the way to the park, about three blocks.

Or, you can exit at the Midtown Station and take 10th Street down to the park.  It is approximately a 10 minute walk to the edge of the park, and you’ll have to walk an additional 5-10 minutes to reach the artist market.  Exit the Midtown station on 10th Street and turn right and walk about 3 blocks.

Three buses will also put you next to the park if you don’t want to walk the 10-15 minute distance from or to the train. All buses depart from the Midtown station:

  • Bus 36 goes down 10th Street and then to Virginia Highland and Emory
  • Bus 99 also goes down 10th Street and then south on Monroe Drive
  • Bus 27 has a stop just outside the 14th Street park entrance, which is right next to the festival.  You can also board this bus at the Lindbergh Center Station.

MARTA to Music Midtown

Music Midtown is a large Atlanta outdoor music event held in Piedmont Park.  MARTA is the recommended option for getting there due to  limited parking and large crowds.  Be advised that you may get ticketed if parking in residential areas during the event.

The closest MARTA station to the festival is the Midtown Station on the red/gold rail line.  Riders can either take the 10th Street exit out of the station, turn right and walk about 15-20 minutes to the Charles Allen entrance or board bus 36 or bus 99 at the station.  Both of these routes have a stop at 8th and Charles Allen Drive, near the festival entrance. It is free to ride the bus if you are transferring from the train.

A second entrance will be near the lake.  Festival goers can cut through the park to reach the entrance versus walking straight down 10th (see festival map).  Bus 27 that also departs from the Midtown and Lindbergh Center Station has a stop at Piedmont and 14th Street, which can be used for this entrance.  Or, exit at the Arts Center Station to avoid some crowds, turn left on 15th Street and walk up the hill to Peachtree Street.  Turn right on Peachtree and walk to 12th Street and turn left again.  There is a 12th Street entrance into the park.  Just follow the sidewalk in the park (keeping to the right of the lake) to reach the lake entrance.   Total walking time is about 25 minutes (see walking map).

  • Purchase a roundtrip MARTA fare at the start of your trip, and preferably in advance of the weekend to avoid lines.
  • Part of the sidewalk is currently under repair just outside the Midtown Station, and you’ll need to cross over 10th Street, but be very careful as there isn’t a crosswalk and there can be heavy traffic on that street.
  • The best place to park and ride MARTA is the Lindbergh Center Station, with free daily parking decks.  Be sure to take your parking ticket with you so you can validate it in the machines with flashing yellow lights on your return trip.  You can either take any southbound train from the Lindbergh Center Station or board bus 27 there, which will take you to the 14th Street entrance to the park.  You must return to your vehicle by midnight.

MARTA to the Brookhaven Arts Festival

The Brookhaven Arts Festival takes place every year in October conveniently behind the Brookhaven Station on Apple Valley Road (see area map). The festival includes live music and a children’s area.

Brookhaven is on the gold rail line in the north, so be sure to board a “Doraville” train if you are coming from the city or the airport.  If you are coming from the blue or green rail line, exit at the Five Points Station and follow the signs to the Northbound platform and wait for a Doraville train there.

MARTA to the Wren’s Nest

The Wren’s Nest is the preserved home of Joel Chandler Harris, who wrote the Brer Rabbit and Uncle Remis stories. Daily tours are offered along with storytelling on Saturdays.

The closest MARTA station is West End on the red/gold south rail line.  The house is about a 10 minute walk away, but you can also get on bus 71 at the station, which is a little safer and better for children.

If you plan to walk, exit the station on Lee Street and turn right.  At the first stoplight, turn left on Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. and walk about two blocks (see walking map).

MARTA to the Atlanta Summer Beer Fest

Presented by Creative Loafing, the Atlanta Summer Beer Fest takes place in June at the Masquerade Music Park (next to the Masquerade at 695 North Avenue).  Plenty of beer and live music to go around. Tickets are required for the event, with prices higher at the door.

To get there on MARTA, board bus 2 at either the North Avenue, Decatur or Candler Park station.  Exit the bus at the intersection of Ponce de Leon and Glen Iris Drive.  Cactus Car Wash, Eats and Ponce City Market will be on the corner.  Walk south on Glen Iris then turn left on North Avenue and walk about a block (see walking map below).

Helpful Tips

  • The Masquerade is also near the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail.  Exit the trail just south of the North Avenue bridge via the one road that connects to that part of the trail.
  • Kroger is nearby for food and supplies, and the closest restaurants are 4th and Swift and Gekki Sushi.
  • Be sure to have at least a roundtrip fare on your MARTA card to make your return trip easier.  MARTA buses accept cash, but you won’t get a  free transfer to the train that way.

MARTA to Festival on Ponce

The Festival on Ponce is a new festival in Atlanta, which will take place July 23 and 24 at the Druid Hills/Olmstead Park end of Ponce de Leon Avenue.  It will have fine and folk arts and crafts along with live acoustic music, a children’s area and local food.

There are several ways to get there on MARTA:

  • Take bus 2 at the North Avenue or Decatur Station.  Be advised that from North Avenue only every other bus travels all the way to the festival.  Board a bus with Decatur Station as the destination.
  • Board bus 6 from Inman Park Station and exit at the intersection of Moreland Avenue and Ponce de Leon (a gas station and church are on the corner).  Walk east on Ponce, away from city, to reach the festival (see area map).
  • For those more adventurous or with bikes, exit at the Candler Park Station and head north through Candler Park to reach other end of the festival, which is about 30 minutes on foot (see walking map).

MARTA to the Midsummer Music and Food Festival

Candler Park hosts the Midsummer Music and Food Festival in June. Completely free, it features music performances, food trucks and a 5K.

The closest station is the Candler Park MARTA Station on the blue/green rail line that runs east and west through the city.  If you are coming from the north or south, be sure to transfer at Five Points to the Eastbound platform and get on a train labeled “Indian Creek” or “Candler Park”.

After exiting the fare gate, follow the exit marked Candler Park.  At street level, head east (away from downtown) on Dekalb Avenue then turn left on Mell Avenue.  This street dead ends at the park.  Total walking distance is about 10 minutes (see walking map below).

MARTA to the South Dekalb Mall

South Dekalb Mall is located at 2801 S. Candler Road and is anchored by Macy’s and Big Cinemas 12.  The closest MARTA station is the Decatur Station on the blue rail line, but you have to take bus 15 from the station to get to the mall.

To get to the Decatur Station from Five Points or downtown, you must be on a train labeled “Indian Creek”.  Follow the signs “To Buses” at the station or take the Swanton Way exit.  Once on the bus, exit just after the bus crosses over I-20.

MARTA to Park Tavern

Park Tavern is located at the edge of Piedmont Park and offers plenty of outdoor seating and cheap beer on rainy days.  Regular events include Unplugged in the Park, Summer Sunsets in the Park with Yacht Rock, Oyster and Crawfish Festival, OysterfestBlues, Brews and BBQ Fest, Lucky Fest and various other holiday-themed and fundraising events.

The closest MARTA station to Park Tavern is the Midtown Station. Take a red or gold line train the the station and from the main station exit, turn right on 10th Street and walk about four blocks, or 20 minutes (see walking map).

You can also take a bus 99 or bus 36 from the Midtown Station.  Bus 99 has a stop right across the street from the tavern.  If coming from bus 36, exit at the stoplight at 10th and Charles Allen.

MARTA to the Buckhead Spring Arts and Crafts Festival

The Buckhead Spring Arts and Crafts Festival is a yearly event located in Chastain Park.   The focus is mainly on art, with live music and food also available.

MARTA to Ansley Park

Built between 1904 and 1930, the Ansley Park Historic District is a neighborhood and not a park,  although there are several greenspaces that provide playgrounds and water features throughout the area.  The neighborhood is known for its large stately homes on winding, tree-lined streets and has a golf course in the north.

The closest MARTA station is the Arts Center Station on the red and gold rail lines.  Take the 15th Street exit out of the station, which is up one level from the fare gates.  Walk down the pedestrian sidewalk through the bus bay and turn left on 15th Street.  Keep walking straight ahead, crossing over Peachtree Street to reach the district.  See area map for navigation.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is on the far side of the neighborhood if you want to combine a neighborhood walking tour with the gardens.

Another option is to board bus 27 from the Midtown Station and exit at along Piedmont Avenue anywhere between 15th Street and Avery Drive.

MARTA to the Biltmore

Built in 1924, the Biltmore Hotel was once the height of elegance in Atlanta, and today the former hotel has been converted into ballroom space for events, offices and luxury condos (Biltmore House).

The Biltmore is located about half-way in between the North Avenue and Midtown Stations at 817 West Peachtree Street, although it is a slightly shorter walk from North Avenue (see area map).

From North Avenue, take the Fox Theatre (not Georgia Tech) exit out of the station.  After going through the fare gate, walk straight ahead through the small indoor shopping mall and turn left on 3rd Street.  The first intersection is with West Peachtree Street.  Turn right and walk another two blocks.

From Midtown, take the Peachtree Place exit out of the station and turn right.  Turn left at the first intersection on to West Peachtree and walk about three blocks.

MARTA to the Kirkwood Spring Fling

Kirkwood Spring Fling logoMay brings another festival to Atlanta, the Kirkwood Spring Fling and Tour of Homes in the Kirkwood neighborhood south of Candler Park.  The event regularly offers a 5k, artist market, children’s area, beer and food.

The location of the festival is in Bessie Branham Park, 2051 Delano Drive.  The closest MARTA station is East Lake and it is about a 20 minute walk from the station.  Take the College Avenue exit out of the station and at street level, turn right on College Avenue then left on Norwood Avenue and walk about three blocks (see walking map).

You can also take bus 24 from the East Lake or Candler Park Station.  It runs along the park.  Be sure to check www.itsmarta.com or the MARTA Facebook page the day of the festival to check on any service changes due to festival road closures.

MARTA to the Michael C. Carlos Museum

The Michael C. Carlos Museum is located on the Emory University campus and is full of artifacts from the ancient world.

There are two buses that travel near the museum, bus 6 and bus 36.  Bus 6 departs from the Inman Park and Lindbergh stations, while bus 36 from Midtown and Avondale.  Regardless of which bus you ride,  plan to exit the bus at N. Decatur Road and Dowman Drive/Oxford Road, which is one of the main entrances to the campus (see area map).

Keep left after entering the campus and turn right at the second street to reach the museum.
